Characteristics and Factors Associated with Health Care in Children Younger than 1 Year with Very Low Birth Weight

“…Preemies are at greater risk of developing iron, zinc and vitamin A deficiencies because they have low stores of these nutrients 7 and because they are suddenly exposed to an environment that exacerbates existing nutritional deficiencies after umbilical cord clamping 6 . Their vulnerability is also increased by low successful breastfeeding rates 8 , unknown nutritional requirements 9 , and quantitatively and qualitatively inadequate monitoring by their families and health care teams at the various levels of care 10 .…”

“…NB survival reflects the service structure for pregnant women and newborn infants in various regions and countries. Current studies indicate that neonatal intensive care reduces the rate of neonatal mortality and morbidity, especially in high risk NB groups, including premature babies, patients with severe congenital malformations, and patients with diseases requiring surgery (2).…”

“…The increase in the survival rate of premature infants, especially among infants with VLBW, has been observed in developed, as well as developing countries. The vulnerability of these babies, the risk of dying, and the incidence of sequels resulting from the conditions of their birth highlight the need for monitoring and evaluating their long-term prognoses (2).…”
