Managing supply chain resilience to pursue business and environmental strategies

Resilience has become a crucial topic in the field of strategic management as it requires companies to design resilient business models to tackle managerial and environmental disruptions of individual firms and supply chains. However, extant research still lacks deep insights into how companies design and manage supply chains according to the resilience principles. With this premise, this paper aims at conducting a state of the art review on supply chain resilience (SCR) considering 125 relevant papers collected from Scopus and Web of Science academic search engine. Starting from the results of the literature review, this study proposes a systemic framework of SCR assessment and contributes to improve the understanding of the impact of different empirically tested constructs on the development of the resilience concept. Further, the findings are summarized in several areas including barriers in developing resilience, metrics to measure the resilience performance, and effective strategies to foster the SCR. Finally, this study outlines promising future research directions for scholars and practitioners.

Examination of Short Supply Chains Based on Circular Economy and Sustainability Aspects

The sustainability of global food chains and intense agricultural production has become questionable. At the same time, the consumers’ interest in short supply chains (SSCs) and direct sales from producers has increased. SSCs are connected to sustainability by researchers. Their (supposed) positive sustainability attributes are based mostly on extensive production methods and short transport distances. However, from other points of view, the economic and environmental sustainability of the short chains is questionable. Our research aims to cast light on the SSCs’ role in circular economy and sustainability. By deep literature review and content analysis, we determine the sustainability aspects of short (local) chains and their effects related to economy and environment. Short supply chains are connected most widely to circularity and sustainability by the subjects of environmental burden (transport, production method, emission), health, food quality, consumers’ behavior, producer-consumer relationships, and local economy. According to our experience, these factors cannot be generalised across all kinds of short chains. Their circular economic and sustainability features are dependent on their spatial location, type, and individual attitudes of the involved consumers and producers.

This study investigates the nature and context-based peculiarities of sustainability practices related to the supply chain of oil servicing firms operating in the downstream sector of Nigerian oil and gas industry. The supply chain management practices of oil servicing firms are crucial to the functioning of the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry. However, the literature on their supply chain sustainability is scant and scattered. To fully explore this field; therefore, survey data were collected from key practitioners in the industry and analysed using descriptive statistics. The results show that the supply chain management practices of oil servicing companies relating to designing, producing, marketing, delivering, and supporting the products of their clients rarely factor in the requirements of sustainability practices. Accordingly, this study points out strategic interventions that could help in greening the supply chain practices of oil servicing companies operating in the downstream sector of the Nigerian oil and gas industry
