Childhood T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia in a single Latin American center: impact of improved treatment scheme and support therapy on survival

Abstract: Background and objective T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) in children represents a high-risk disease. There is a lack of studies assessing the outcome of T-ALL in Hispanic populations, in which it is a rare malignancy. We report the characteristics and results of treatment for childhood T-cell ALL in children over 14 years at a Latin American reference center. “…In the present study, the frequency of T-cell ALL was of 7.0%. This finding is similar to the reported in the most of the studies conducted in MC (5.7–12.4%) ( 3 , 24 , 25 , 139 ) and other regions of the world (10–15%) ( 140 , 141 ). Conversely, in another study conducted in MC by Perez-Saldivar et al, where the authors reported a frequency around the 24% among ALL subtypes ( 3 ).…”

“…MRD was assessed by eight‐color flow cytometry performed on a FACSCanto II flow cytometer (BD Biosciences, San José, CA). MRD studies were performed at the end of the treatment and MRD was considered negative when <0.01% and with a detection capacity of 1 × 10 –5 8 …”

“…Compared with patients with B-cell ALL, T-cell ALL patients are generally older, with a median presenting age of 9 years [10,146]. More than 50% of T-ALL also present with hyperleukocytosis, with a median count of 76 × 10 9 /L [146,147]. However unlike for B-ALL, the prognostic importance of age, presenting WBC, and NCI criteria in T-ALL is limited.…”
