The wood sorrel family, Oxalidaceae, is mainly composed of annual or perennial herbs, a few shrubs, and trees distributed from temperate to tropical zones. Members of Oxalidaceae are of high medicinal, ornamental, and economic value. Despite the rich diversity and value of Oxalidaceae, few molecular markers or plastomes are available for phylogenetic analysis of the family. Here, we reported four new whole plastomes of Oxalidaceae and compared them with plastomes of three species in the family, as well as the plastome of Rourea microphylla in the closely related family Connaraceae. The eight plastomes ranged in length from 150,673 bp ( Biophytum sensitivum ) to 156,609 bp ( R. microphylla ). Genome annotations revealed a total of 129–131 genes, including 83–84 protein-coding genes, eight rRNA genes, 37 tRNA genes, and two to three pseudogenes. Comparative analyses showed that the plastomes of these species have minor variations at the gene level. The smaller plastomes of herbs B. sensitivum and three Oxalis species are associated with variations in IR region sizes, intergenic region variation, and gene or intron loss. We identified sequences with high variation that may serve as molecular markers in taxonomic studies of Oxalidaceae. The phylogenetic trees of selected superrosid representatives based on 76 protein-coding genes corroborated the Oxalidaceae position in Oxalidales and supported it as a sister to Connaraceae. Our research also supported the monophyly of the COM (Celastrales, Oxalidales, and Malpighiales) clade.

The flavor and taste of the foods play an important or even a decisive role in the acceptance and preference of the consumers. It was found that the sesame paste prepared with the germinated sesame seeds was bitter in our previous experiment. In the study, the volatile and non-volatile bitter-taste components of the sesame paste samples were comprehensively analyzed. 2-methylbutanal, hexanal, acetic acid, and butyric acid were the predominant volatile compounds in the soaked and germinated sesame pastes. Oxalate was significantly reduced by the germination (p < 0.05). The contents of sesaminoltriglucoside in sesame pastes ranged from 129.04 to 217.57 μg/g. Both total and individual free amino acid contents increased with the prolongation of the germinating time. The bitter-taste amino acid Arg had the highest score of Taste Activity Value for the bitterest sample made from the seeds germinated for 36 hours. The bitter-tasting Arg was first reported to impart a bitter taste to the germinated sesame paste.

Asam sunti merupakan bumbu masakan khas Aceh terbuat dari belimbing wuluh yang diasinkan, difermentasi dan dikeringkan sehingga dapat disimpan dalam jangka waktu 1-1,5 tahun. Namun, proses yang digunakan untuk mengolah belimbing wuluh segar menjadi asam sunti berbeda-beda, tergantung pada kebiasaan masyarakat setempat atau permintaan konsumen. Hal ini menyebabkan kualitas produk sangat bervariasi dan tidak memenuhi standar mutu. Pada kegiatan Pengabdian kepada Masyarakat (PkM), pendampingan langsung terhadap satu usaha rumah tangga di Desa Alue Jeureujak, Kecamatan, Babahrot, Kabupaten Aceh Barat Daya, Provinsi Aceh. Tujuan dilakukannya PkM ini adalah untuk memperbaiki proses pembuatan dan kemasan sehingga mutu produk yang dihasilkan tetap terjaga dan harga jual dapat ditingkatkan. Kegiatan PkM yang berlangsung selama 3 bulan dengan pendampingan secara langsung di lokasi selama 1 bulan terdiri dari beberapa kegiatan yaitu: peninjauan rumah produksi, perbaikan proses pembuatan asam sunti, perbaikan kemasan produk asam sunti, dan perhitungan harga jual produk asam sunti. Kemasan yang sebelumnya hanya menggunakan kantong plastik tanpa label, saat ini produk asam sunti telah dijual dengan kemasan standing pouch berlabel. Setelah satu bulan pendampingan, pendapatan usaha meningkat dari Rp 334.000, menjadi Rp 436.000, dengan skala penjualan yang sebelumnya tidak terukur menjadi 80 pak ukuran 250 gr dalam satu bulan.
