“…Identification of lignans 4 and 5 was based on experiments 1 H and 13 C NMR, and HMBC. 1 H and 13 C NMR data are in accordance with those reported in the literature as paulownin 22,23 and cycloolivil 24 , respectively. In this study furanonaphthoquinone 2 and lignans 4 and 5 are being reported for the first time from ipê-amarelo wood.…”

“…Nine lignans; isolated by column chromatography; were reported from certain members of genus Cycas. C. vespertilio 34,42 and C. aenigma 43 have yielded pinoresinol (55). Sesamin (56) was isolated from C. vespertilio 24 and C. sancti-lasallei 44 .…”

“…Sesamin (56) was isolated from C. vespertilio 24 and C. sancti-lasallei 44 . Both paulownin (57) 42 and (+)-lariciresinol (57) 34,42 were obtained from C. vespertilio. (+)-lariciresinol (58) was separated from C. revoluta 8 .…”

“…AHCs have been reported in more than 50 plant species and are likely even more widespread in the plant kingdom. Given that AHCs have been found in extant cycads like Cycas vespertilio [ 3 ] and many other gymnosperms [ 2 ], it can be hypothesized that their biosynthesis originated with, if not before, the appearance of gymnosperms. However, since fatty alcohols and hydroxycinnamates have been found in the cuticle of extant plants, whose appearance in evolutionary time predates that of gymnosperms (e.g., Physcomitrella patens ) [ 4 ], it is likely that the capacity for plants to synthesize AHCs evolved more than 300 mya.…”
