are the most important species in China, whereas Crataegus laevigata Poir. (syn: Crataegus oxyacantha L.), Crataegus monogyna Jacq., Crataegus pentagyna Waldst., Crataegus nigra Waldst., and Crataegus azarolus L. are the major species in Europe [Rayyan et al., 2005; Liu et al., 2011]. Crataegus species have long been used in traditional Chinese and European herbal medicine. In addition to being highly recommended in folk medicine, hawthorn berries are valuable food ingredient due to the content of nutrients and compounds with health benefi ts [Bernatoniene et al., 2008; Tadić et al., 2008]. Hawthorn berries are used to prepare jams, jelly, drinks, wine, and canned fruit. Fruits and leaves of hawthorn are rich in phenolic compounds, which are considered to be the key bioactive compounds in this plant, accounting for its antioxidant activity and other benefi cial biological effects [Bleske et al., 2008]. The main components of hawthorn are thought to be fl avones, fl avonols, fl avan-3-ols (especially (-)-epicatechin), and fl avan-3-ol oligomers (procyanidins) [Liu et al., 2011; Svedström et al., 2006; Yang & Liu, 2012]. Oligomeric procyanidins and their glycosides are the major phenolic compounds in fruits, whereas fl avonols, fl avonol glycosides, and C-glycosyl fl avones dominate in leaves [Liu et al., 2011]. On the basis of literature data, quercetin, kaempferol, and sexangularetin are the major fl avonols in hawthorn [Yang & Liu, 2012]. This study was conducted to investigate the phytochemical properties of different varieties of pepper fruits, to identify and quantify the phenolic profile of methanolic extracts of the aforementioned plants and to evaluate the antioxidant activity of the crude extracts of the plants under investigation in comparative study. Results revealed that ascorbic acid and total carotenoids contents of pepper fruits ranged between 83.30 to 194.44 (mg/g fw) and 12.19 to 75.72 (µg/g F.W), respectively. Balady green pepper extract contained the highest total polyphenols and total flavonoids contents as 52.65 (mg GAE/g) and 41.69 (mg QE/g), respectively. Hesperidin was the predominant flavonoid in red bell and Balady green peppers extracts with concentrations of 1513.13 and 1065.65 µg/g, respectively. While, pyrogallol was identified as the highest phenolic compound in yellow bell pepper extract as 2175.89 µg/g. This study also confirmed the highest antioxidant activity of Balady green pepper extract using total antioxidant capacity (TAC), DPPH radical scavenging and reducing power assays. This study recommends consumers using the balady green pepper as a rich and inexpensive source of natural antioxidants

Polythiophene and its derivatives are valuable conjugated polymers due to their physical properties and applications in various fields. Precursors of polythiophenes were conventionally obtained from petrochemical byproducts, which are non-renewable. Thiophene and its derivatives had been found naturally in Tagetes species such as Tagetes erecta, Tagetes tenuifolia, etc. Tagetes species produce 2, 2':5', 2''-terthienyl (Alpha-T), 5-(3-buten-1-ynyl)-2, 20-bithienyl (BBT), 5-(4-hydroxy-1-butynyl)-2, 20-bithienyl (BBTOH), and 5-(4-acetoxy-1-butynyl)-2, 20-bithienyl (BBTOAc), which are accumulated in different parts, specifically in the roots of the plants. These thiophene derivatives were extracted and identified by GC-MS, Uv-vis, FTIR and TLC analysis. The partially purified plant extract is polymerized through one step oxidative free radical polymerization to obtain polythiophenes. Product characterization has revealed that the selective polymerization of thiophene derivatives results in the phase-separated end product from the rest of the materials in the plant-extract.
