Evaluation of surgery and surgical results of Baha® Attract system implantations – single centre experience of hundred twenty five cases

Abstract: Implantation of the Baha Attract system is an easy and safe procedure. It can be performed under local anaesthesia in adults. There are no major surgical problems or complications, and the healing process proceeds efficiently in most patients. Postoperative pain is usually mild and gradually decreases in the following months. Numbness in the operated area is frequent, but as reinnervation occurs in time, the numb patch decreases in size and finally completely disappears in most cases.

“…However, these complication rates decreased during follow-up, being reported only sporadically in the last follow-up consultation. 23,24 In the present study, a lower complication rate of 22.8% was observed with the Sophono implant, and the most frequent complication described was a minor one, related to pain or pressure around the external unit, with the symptoms being relieved by decreasing magnet intensity, as previously reported by Shin (2016). 25 However, some studies, such as the one by Marsella (2014), also report the persistence of this symptom, even with a decrease in the intensity of the magnet, making it unfeasible for the patient to use the device due to pain, which constitutes a major complication.…”

“…The current study did not find large differences in wound infections or pain. Gawęcki et al (2019) reported pain, paresthesia, and numbness individually and showed high rates of the latter for passive devices. However, it is clinically likely that the majority of patients in all studies had substantial rates of numbness that were not reported as a complication as they can be considered routine sequelae of the procedure.…”

“…The most common minor complications were postoperative pain, numbness, or paresthesia. However, Gawęcki et al (2019) reported high rates of numbness and postoperative pain, greatly adding to the total number of minor complications in the passive device group.…”

“… 9 , 10 Moreover, the permanent pressure to the skin can lead to redness or pain over the magnet, and sometimes even to soft tissue necrosis. 11 , 12 Presently, there are two different systems available on the market: the Sophono® (Medtronic, USA) and the Baha® Attract (Cochlear Ltd, Australia).…”
