“…Headaches caused by sphenoid sinus mucoceles occur primarily in the retrobulbar position in the early stages15 and are usually bilateral and progressive. Discomfort caused by the mucocele can be relieved by the administration of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs 16. Due to tissue compression around the sphenoid sinus by mucocele expansion and secondary infections, headaches are usually associated with sensory and deep pain, which can occur in any part of the head 17.…”

“…It could be due to mucosal inflammation of the paranasal sinuses, referred along the distribution of the ophthalmic division of the trigeminal nerve, or local bony destruction and irritation of the overlying dura. Also certain inflammatory cytokines such as TNF alpha, IL-6, IL-1, and PGE2 are found within the mucoceles which may cause trigeminal sensitization [5] The investigations for diagnosis of a sphenoid sinus mucocele include CT scan and MRI scans of the paranasal sinuses. The CT scan would show a hypodense cystic lesion in the sphenoid sinus with or without extension to the adjacent sellar and parasellar regions.…”

“…Uncommon, but serious, complications include meningitis, brain abscess, orbital cellulitis, orbital abscess, and mucocele (10). A mucocele is a benign, but potentially destructive, mucus-containing cyst that can form in any of the sinuses and may present with a progressive headache and cranial nerve palsies due to compression, especially in the sphenoid sinus (55,56).…”
