The effect of heavy metal contamination on the bacterial community structure at Jiaozhou Bay, China

Abstract: In this study, determination of heavy metal parameters and microbiological characterization of marine sediments obtained from two heavily polluted sites and one low-grade contaminated reference station at Jiaozhou Bay in China were carried out. The microbial communities found in the sampled marine sediments were studied using PCR-DGGE (denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis) fingerprinting profiles in combination with multivariate analysis. Clustering analysis of DGGE and matrix of heavy metals displayed simi… Show more

“…Previous studies on heavy metal influence towards microbial communities were performed using PCR-DGGE and GS 454 FLX pyrosequencing (Muller et al, 2001, Yao et al, 2017, Vishnivetskaya et al, 2011. Next generation sequencing (NGS) methods can assist in the identification of very rare taxa in the landfill samples (Köchling et al, 2015, Song et al, 2015a.…”

“…This can be related to various stress factors accompanying faecal water contamination that affect the basic ecological processes of ecosystems, leading to suppression of some microbes and enrichment of others, disruption in natural processes of biodegradation, water flow and nutrient availabilities. A negative response of the aquatic microbial community to the combined impacts of organic and inorganic pollutants, and variations in temperature, oxygen, salinity, acidification, nutrient and organic matter variabilities have been widely observed (Van Horn et al , ; Pratt et al , ; Mahmoudi et al , ; Ibekwe et al , ; Mesa et al , ; Yao et al , ).…”
