Cardiac complications associated with the influenza viruses A subtype H7N9 or pandemic H1N1 in critically ill patients under intensive care

Abstract: Critically ill hospitalized H7N9 patients experienced a higher rate of cardiac complications than did patients with 2009 pandemic H1N1 influenza virus infections, with the exception of pericardial effusion. This study may help in the prevention, identification, and treatment of influenza-induced cardiac complications in both pandemic H1N1 influenza virus and H7N9 infections.

“…It is likely that patients with COVID-19 related pneumonia will experience similar adverse outcomes. Interestingly, cardiovascular abnormalities observed during hospitalization in eight patients with H7N9 influenza returned to normal at 1-year follow-up [ 34 ]. Future longitudinal follow-up of COVID-19 survivors would be crucial to elucidate its long-term impact of COVID-19 and to protect these patients from future CVD.…”

“…Acute kidney injury was identified on the basis of elevated serum creatinine according to the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes guideline (12). Cardiac injury was recognized by increased cardiac troponin I or electrocardiography abnormalities of non-specific ST-T waves (13,14). Transaminitis was defined by aspartate aminotransferase or alanine aminotransferase levels >80 U/L.…”

“…The distinction between pulmonary edema and interstitial patterns from other etiologies is clear, but the difference between viral pneumonia and interstitial patterns from different etiologies may not be as obvious. 6,7 Furthermore, although the most frequent cause of interstitial pneumonia at this time is the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) virus, other causes remain possible (atypical bacteria, flu viruses, etc).…”
