Ventilator-associated pneumonia: the influence of bacterial resistance, prescription errors, and de-escalation of antimicrobial therapy on mortality rates

Abstract: Prescription errors influenced mortality of patients with Ventilator-associated pneumonia, underscoring the challenge of proper Ventilator-associated pneumonia treatment, which requires continuous reevaluation to ensure that clinical response to therapy meets expectations.

“…The de-escalation rate was low (18.3%), although in line with current literature ranging between 10% and 38%. [23][24][25] This is probably a consequence of the observed high rate of resistant organisms, which is in accordance with the literature (<10% of de-escalation performed in case of MDR bacteria). 23 Reduction of prevalence of MDR in the ICU (and in the hospital) is one of the cornerstones of antimicrobial stewardship programs.…”

“…Antibiotics are one of the most widely used agents in the intensive care unit (ICU) setting . In ICUs, pneumonia represents one of the most common nosocomial infections worldwide . The need for prompt and effective antibiotic therapy for pneumonia is crucial as it has been linked to increased morbidity and mortality, prolonged length of ICU stay, and increased healthcare cost …”
