Cervical spondylitis and spinal abscess due to Actinomyces meyeri

Abstract: Human actinomycosis with involvement of the spine is a rare condition although it has been first described a long time ago. It is probably underrecognized since its clinical presentation is often misleading and accurate bacteriological diagnosis is challenging. We herein report a rare case of cervical actinomycosis with paravertebral abscess and spondylitis imputed to an infection by Actinomyces meyeri in a 52-year-old immunocompetent Caucasian man. A. meyeri should be considered as a potential cause for subac… Show more

“…Typically, the patients' dentition and oral hygiene are poor, which are predisposing factors for the disease to occur. A recent report described an actinomycotic case with an involvement of the cervical spine, where A. meyeri was isolated from prevertebral pus samples and blood (136). Among 15 actinomycotic cases with an involvement of thoracic vertebral bone, however, A. israelii was detected in 9 of the cases, and A. meyeri was detected in 1 (137).…”

“…21 Surgery may be recommended to drain the lesion and remove the site of infection, but high doses of penicillin for a prolonged time is the treatment of choice. 9,21 Mortality rates of treated human patients can be high, up to 28% in a previous report. 10 In dogs, Actinomyces spp.…”

“…Other cases reported intracranial actinomycosis [3][4][5][6]9], but in none of them A. meyeri was recognized as the causative pathogen of primary brain abscess. Only one recent article [10] has reported a cervical actinomycosis with paravertebral abscess and spondylitis imputed to an infection by A. meyeri: in this case an avulsion of teeth 46 and 47, presumed to be the entry point of the infectious process.…”
