“…Patients were excluded from the study if they exhibited co-infection with the hepatitis B virus or human immunodefi ciency virus (HIV) or a low score on the MiniMental Status Examination, which was suggestive of a cognitive defi cit. This report is a component of a major project investigating the psychopathological characteristics of CHC patients and the clinical and laboratorial correlates of these characteristics 16,17 .…”

“…The patients were recruited from a referral center and may not have refl ected the overall population of CHC patients. This study did not use structured interviews or specific instruments for the comprehensive assessment of SD because the data were extracted from a broader project investigating the psychopathological characteristics of CHC patients 16,17 . In this context, we did not distinguish between specific SD symptoms, such as the loss of libido, premature ejaculation, erectile dysfunction and impotence.…”

“…11,12 Few prospective studies have assessed HRQOL in CHC patients using detailed clinical and psychiatric approaches in combination with semi-structured interviews for psychiatric diagnosis. 13,14 Depressive symptoms have been extensively identified in adults with chronic health conditions, 15 and correlate negatively with HRQOL. Patients with CHC have a high prevalence of depressive disorders, 11,16 up to 70%, which is seven-fold higher than that found in the general population, independently of the degree of hepatic injury.…”

“…Brazilian studies on this subject remain scarce 9,10,[15][16][17][18] and have focused on the prevalence of impulsive behaviors 10 and psychiatric disorders 9,15,17 in CHC sufferers and the impact of the disease on their quality of life 16,18 . The aim of this investigation was to estimate the prevalence of depressive symptoms and harmful alcohol use in patients with CHC at the onset of antiviral treatment and to evaluate the possible demographic, clinical and psychosocial correlates.…”

“…The prevalence of depressive symptoms and harmful alcohol use and their associated factors were estimated. To our knowledge, very few Brazilian studies have systematically investigated the sociodemographic and lifestyle characteristics (e.g., tobacco and illicit drug use, social support) of CHC patients at the beginning of antiviral treatment or examined the association of these characteristic with psychiatric conditions 10,[15][16][17] . Moreover, in the present study depressive symptoms and harmful alcohol use were evaluated using standardized instruments.…”
