Evaluation of rapid tests for human immunodeficiency virus as a tool to detect recent seroconversion

Abstract: The identification of recent HIV infection is important for epidemiological studies and to monitor the epidemic. The objective of this study was to evaluate two rapid tests that are easily available to the Brazilian scientific community for using as markers of recent HIV infection. The Rapid Test - HIV-1/2 Bio-Manguinhos (Bio-Manguinhos/Fiocruz, Brazil) and the Rapid Check HIV 1&2 (NDI-UFES, Center for Infectious Diseases, Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo) were tested, using 489 samples with HIV positive… Show more

“…A positive result on the first RDT screening test, followed by a negative RDT result on the diluted sample suggests recent infection. This algorithm has been successfully employed in incidence surveys using different RDTs and at differing dilution levels [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…Although it is not an epidemiological routine in Brazil, RITA is an important tool with vast benefits such as identifying populations most vulnerable to infection, monitoring prevention programs and assessing the behaviour of the epidemic in real-time. Additionally, it can clinically benefit individuals, because the early detection of infection favours the prognosis and treatment (Girardi et al, 2012). Based on the clinical and epidemiological importance of RITA, this study aimed to determine the rate of recent infection and incidence of HIV-1 in individuals at the VCT in the city of Cabo de Santo Agostinho, Pernambuco, Northeast Brazil.…”

“…Commercially available rapid HIV tests were modified as less sensitive assays to identify recent HIV infection [ 16 ]. Although these modified assays can be used to estimate HIV-1 incidence, complicated steps for dilution and subtype B-derived antigen limit their practical application [ 17 18 ]. The recently developed lateral flow assay detects recent HIV-1 infection by measuring antibody avidity with multi-subtype-recombinant proteins.…”
