“…The hemoglobin slice [8.1 -10] g/dl represented 38.1% and the mean hemoglobin level was 9.2 ± 2.03 g/dl. This result is close to that of Tolo [13] who found an average hemoglobin level of 8.93 g/dl in Mali, but lower than those found by other authors as Beyne [12] (10 g/dl); Roth [14] (10.6 g/dl); and Callera [11] (10.9 g/dl).…”

“…Anemia is more common among older persons and the prevalence increases with advancing age [36]. Anemia in older adults is frequently associated with negative outcomes, including decreased physical performance, increased number of falls, increased frailty, increased hospitalization, increased cognitive impairment and increased mortality [7].…”

“…Anaemia is not among the "giants of geriatrics" originally described by Isaacs, but meets three of the four features later suggested by Isaacs for what the "giants of geriatrics" have in common [18]. Anaemia is common in older people and its prevalence increases with advancing age [41][42][43][44]. Anaemia in older adults is frequently associated with negative outcomes, including decreased physical performance, increased number of falls, increased frailty, increased hospitalization, increased cognitive impairment and increased mortality [45].…”
