Background: Considerable number of elderly patients still experience preoperative anxiety and poor postoperative anesthesia recovery, despite magnitude advances in laparoscopic management and improved anesthetic techniques, resulted from many improper connotations such as the complexity of anesthesia and surgery, fear of experiencing pain, physiologic response, patient unique characteristics, or being improperly informed. To date, anxiety and recovery in an elderly population undergoing laparoscopic abdominal surgeries have received very little attention and interventional studies with a structured preoperative teaching program addressing such variables are so limited. Teaching elderly patients the appropriate modification of activities and effective use of anxiety-reduction techniques all impact favorably upon their recovery outcome. Thus, the focus of this study is to evaluate the impact of laparoscopic surgery and anesthesia-related educational program on preoperative-associated anxiety and postoperative quality of anesthesia recovery for elderly patients subjected to laparoscopic abdominal surgeries. Methodology: A randomized pretest-posttest and follow-up control group research design was utilized, in two specialized laparoscopic abdominal surgical departments affiliated to Alexandria Main University Hospital, between the first of January to the end of August 2020. We interviewed 86 elderly patients scheduled for elective laparoscopic abdominal surgeries divided randomly into control and intervention groups, for investigating the following study variables: (1) preoperative anxiety (using State-Trait Anxiety Inventory on primary admission and the 2 nd day of admission just before surgery), and (2) postoperative quality of anesthesia recovery (using Quality of Recovery Score-15 in the initial 24-hours post-surgery, before discharge, and on the 7th day follow-up schedule). The proposed Arabic-version instructional program was introduced to the intervention group, then a comparison of the means between the predetermined groups was performed. Results: Degree of anxiety for the intervention group following the instruction scheme proved to be significantly lowered than those in routine hospital care group. The program conduction confirmed to have a statistically significant effect on the intervention group's recovery outcome than those in the parallel group including an amelioration in pain, physical discomfort, physical independence, as well as emotional dimensions, as evidenced by the marked percent improvement through the whole application periods. Conclusion: Preoperative engagement in the interventional informative sessions offers benefits to diminish the level of anxiety through gained knowledge and application of anxiety-relief manipulations in the subjected group. Through practiced skills of discharge self-management, quality of anesthesia recovery proved to be better than those in the control group with a statistically significant discrepancy between them. El objetivo de la presente investigación fue evaluar el nivel de ansiedad (NA) y las características sociodemográficas (CSD) asociadas a ella en pacientes adultos prequirúrgicos (PAPQ) para apendicectomía convencional (AC) en el Hospital de Apoyo Chepén durante el periodo Julio – Setiembre del 2020. Se realizó un estudio no experimental, aplicado, transversal, analítico, en 50 pacientes de ambos sexos. Fueron excluidas personas con diagnósticos previos de patología psiquiátrica, que abandonaron la investigación durante su desarrollo y encuestas con llenado incompleto. La edad promedio fue de 29,28 años (DE: 7,804), con predominio del sexo masculino (62 %), en cuanto al grado de instrucción, secundaria presentó una frecuencia del 68 %, seguida en un 22 % y 10 % de los grados superior técnico y superior universitaria respectivamente. El 22 % de los participantes fueron solteros, 42 % convivientes y 36 % casados. Ama de casa (32 %), mototaxista (16 %) y estudiante (14 %) constituyeron las principales ocupaciones. El 78 % de los pacientes presentó carga familiar. El nivel de ansiedad fue alto en el 76 % de los casos, medio en un 18 % y en el 5 % bajo. Las CSD asociadas al NA fueron: sexo (0,026), estado civil (p = 0,001), ocupación (p = 0,001), carga familiar (p = 0,01) y carecer de antecedente de cirugías previas (p = 0,046). Se concluye que el NA en PAPQ para AC es alto y las CSD asociadas a ello son estado civil, ocupación, carga familiar y no presentar cirugías previas.

OBJECTIVE: Metabolic changes caused by anxiety can interfere in both the surgery itself and the recovery process. One way to reassure the patient is to clarify how the procedure will be performed and discuss the possible complications. This study aimed to investigate the anxiety level of candidates for radical prostatectomy at a university hospital. METHODS:Thirty-four patients with a diagnosis of prostate cancer were studied prospectively. Data collection involved the administration of the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and a radical prostatectomy knowledge test. RESULTS:The results showed that 94.1% of the patients reported having received clarifications from the physician or healthcare team regarding the surgery and 23.5% reported having received information on the probability of a medical error during surgery. The most cited postoperative complications were sexual impotence and urinary incontinence. A significant association was found between the total Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score and the complications cited (p=0.0004); patients who marked a larger number of possible complications had a higher Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale score. CONCLUSION:The present study demonstrates that the explanations given by the multidisciplinary health team are not achieving their maximum potential in terms of lowering patient anxiety.
