“…Smoking is a risk factor for many perioperative complications, such as cardiovascular and respiratory complications and surgical site infection. 25 In a study investigating the effects of exhaled CO levels on preoperative smoking status and perioperative respiratory complications in patients who underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, Ozgunay et al 26 have demonstrated that the incidence of bronchospasm during extubation, hypoxia, cough, and apnea in the PACU significantly increased in the smoking group. They reported that the incidence of cough among smokers was 41.3% and 6.5% in non-smokers.…”
