Cutaneous manifestations of bartonellosis

Abstract: Bartonellosis are diseases caused by any kind of Bartonella species. The infection manifests as asymptomatic bacteremia to potentially fatal disorders. Many species are pathogenic to humans, but three are responsible for most clinical symptoms: Bartonella bacilliformis, Bartonella quintana, and Bartonella henselae. Peruvian wart, caused by B. bacilliformis, may be indistinguishable from bacillary angiomatosis caused by the other two species. Other cutaneous manifestations include maculo-papular rash in trench … Show more

“…Our patient did not have Osler's nodes or Janeway lesions, but he did present with purpura in his lower extremities, which was reminiscent of ANCA-related vasculitis. Lin et al reported on the cutaneous manifestations of bartonellosis ( 14 ). In their review, they cited the paper from Teoh et al, reporting that vasculitis can be induced by bartonellosis and even simulate systemic vasculitis with ANCA positivity ( 15 ).…”

“…In addition to cat scratch disease, Bartonella henselae causes from asymptomatic bacteraemia to potentially fatal diseases, and, certainly due to the lack of knowledge on the part of health professionals and the consequent weakness in diagnosis, it has not been correctly diagnosed (Lins et al, 2019). Transmission to the individual occurs through scratches from domestic cats or wild cats, usually asymptomatic, infested with infected fleas.…”
