Reactive oxygen species (ROS) encompasses a collection of complicated chemical entities characterized by individually specific biological reactivities and physicochemical properties. ROS detection is attracting tremendous attention. The reaction-based nanomaterials for ROS “turn-on” sensing represent novel and efficient tools for ROS detection. These nanomaterials have the advantages of high sensitivity, real-time sensing ability, and almost infinite contrast against background. This review focuses on appraising nanotechnologies with the ROS “turn-on” detection mechanism coupled with the ability for broad biological applications. In this review, we highlighted the weaknesses and advantages in prior sensor studies and raised some guidelines for the development of future nanoprobes.

Oxygen-derived free radicals (ODFRs) are partially reduced oxygen reactive intermediates in living organisms during various biological processes, such as mitochondrial respirations, enzyme-catalyzed oxidations, and radiolysis. Of various ODFRs being identified, superoxide anion (O 2•-) and hydroxyl (•OH) radicals are extensively investigated. Due to their high reactivity, these radicals can oxidize many biomolecules, including nucleic acids, proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates, which would damage some key cellular components. Under oxidative stress, elevated oxygen radical levels are closely associated with various diseases, such as neurodegenerative diseases, cardiovascular diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and cancers. In this context, a number of responsive nanoprobes have been developed for luminescent detection of ODFRs in living organisms.In this review, we briefly introduce the production of ODFRs and their biological importance for various diseases. We then extensively summarize responsive nanoprobes for detection and bioimaging of these two oxygen radicals, O 2 •and•OH, which are designed and developed based on their specific oxidation mechanisms in the recent decade. Challenges and some future research directions are also proposed as the conclusion. Steady‐State and Dynamic Bioanalysis using Carbon Quantum Dot‐based Luminescence Probes

Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with excellent biocompatibility, tunable emission and designable surface composition have been widely applied for luminescent sensing of diverse biological targets. In addition to homogeneous bioanalysis, dynamic bioanalysis of biological analytes is also achieved with the combination of single-particle imaging technique. In this review, we majorly conclude the recently adopted steady-state and dynamic bioanalysis based on CQD luminescence probes. The synthesis and lumines-cence mechanism of CQDs is first introduced. Regarding the CQD-based luminescent bioanalysis, sensing principles and tactics are provided. The steady-state bioanalysis systems are discussed according to the targets. Dynamic bioanalysis platforms are concluded in two aspects: time-dependent accumulation and real-time dynamics. This review ends with the discussion of challenges and future trends of CQD probebased luminescent bioanalysis.
