In this study, using high throughput Bpyrosequencing,ŵ e highlighted the bacterial diversity of the traditional Algerian date product BBtana^that is produced in southern Algeria using both direct (DBM) and indirect (UBM) methods. Metagenomic analysis yielded a total of 103,379 reads, with a 606 total operational taxonomic units (OTUs) detected. Firmicutes represented 84.79 % of the total pyrosequencing reads. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Bacillales represented 90.20 % ± 15.12 % of the total reads. Among the phylotypes detected, Bacillus was the dominant genus (39.53 %). While Bacillus megaterium was shared among all of the samples, its distribution varied widely. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (nMDS) analysis showed that UBM samples clustered together, and three main OTUs were found in these UBM samples: Paenibacillus polymyxa, Paenibacillus xylanexedens, and Planomicrobium JN082684. Correlation analysis showed no association between parameters of the samples (age, pH, water activity) and the specific microbiota.

Novel bacterial blight (BB) resistance gene(s) for rice was (were) introduced into a cultivated japonica rice variety Oryza sativa (cv. 8411), via somatic hybridization using the wild rice Oryza meyeriana as the donor of the resistance gene(s). Twenty-nine progenies of somatically hybridized plants were obtained. Seven somatically hybridized plants and their parents were used for AFLP (amplified fragment length polymorphism) analysis using 8 primer pairs. Results confirmed that these plants were somatic hybrids containing the characteristic bands of both parents. The morphology of the regenerated rice showed characters of both O. sativa and O. meyeriana. Two somatic hybrids showed highest BB resistance and the other 8 plants showed moderate resistance. The new germplasms with highest resistance have been used in the rice breeding program for the improvement of bacterial blight resistance.

ABSTRACT The genetic variability and yield stability are complex traits with large environmental components that are utilized for breeding of improved plant performance under drought conditions. In order to better understand the relationship among genotype, trait components, and environment, marker-trait associations in 20 wheat varieties using phenotypic and ISSR (Inter-Simple Sequence Repeat) markers under drought conditions were examined. The combined analysis of variance results showed that the tested traits were significantly influenced by years, irrigation treatments, and the varieties. The drought stress conditions resulted in a substantial reduction in grain yield by 33.70%. The varieties viz., Shakha-93, Sahel-1, Giza-160, Giza-168, Sids-1, Sids-4 and Nilen were relatively drought resistant (DSI, Drought Susceptibility Index values< 1) and gave high grain yield when compared with the average of all varieties under drought stress. The stability analysis revealed that the cultivar named 'Sids-1' showed high and stable yield (bi=1 and S 2 di = 0), so it could be selected to be grown under drought stress conditions.
