10 year mass balance by glaciological and geodetic methods of Glaciar Bahía del Diablo, Vega Island, Antarctic Peninsula

Abstract: We present new glacier mass-balance field data from Glaciar Bahía del Diablo, Vega Island, northeastern Antarctic Peninsula. The results provided here represent glacier mass-balance data over a 10 year period (2001–11) obtained by the glaciological and geodetic methods relying on field measurements. Glacier surface digital elevation models (DEMs) were obtained in 2001 and 2011 from a kinematic GPS field survey with high horizontal and vertical accuracies. In situ mass-balance data were collected from yearly st… Show more

“…Overall, the ice caps and glaciers of this region are one of the major sources of current sea level rise contributing 0.22 mm a −1 [22], compared to 0.47 ± 0.23 mm a −1 for the entire Greenland Ice Sheet between 1991-2015 [23]. Nonetheless, there is a large uncertainty concerning the volume change of glaciers in the Antarctic periphery, as the ground based measurements are relatively scarce [20,24]. King George Island is the largest island in the South Shetland Islands archipelago (Figure 2a,b).…”

“…With respect to the density of snow reported from the AP region (Table 2), we used the value of 500 kg m . The uncertainty range is set to ±90 kg m −3 to cover a midrange of density values that was measured on JRI Ice Cap (Aristarain and Delmas, 1981) and Vega Island (Marinsek and Ermolin, 2015). Point balances were extrapolated over the entire glacier area, allowing the calculation of the glacier-wide average surface mass balance.…”

“…K −1 (Bintanja, 1995). Although the impact of regional cooling in the northeastern AP on surface mass balance has been reported recently (Marinsek and Ermolin, 2015;Oliva and others, 2017), the glacial response to changes in individual climate factors remains unresolved. Besides the changes in largescale circulation patterns (Marshall and others, 2013;Turner and others, 2016), the impact of local climate factors should be considered (van Wessem and others, 2015).…”

“…Marinsek and Ermolin compared the elevation differences from kinematic GPS surveys on Bahía del Diablo glacier on the Antarctic Peninsula in 2000-2001 and 2010, finding that the geodetic mass balance calculated based on elevation change was close to the glaciological mass balance [45].…”
