The use of immersive simulation as a pedagogical tool has great potential for making a significant impact on student learning in higher education. In this study, the effect of immersive simulation was evaluated for a cohort of undergraduate special education majors. The investigation aimed to determine whether facilitating an immersive co-planning simulation would have an impact on targeted collaboration skills, and also whether vicarious observational learning would occur for students who observed the simulation. Pre-service teachers in special education were evaluated by their peers on their ability to demonstrate knowledge of (1) co-teaching and co-planning, (2) professional communication, and (3) supports for students with disabilities. The results indicate that they did a better job of facilitating a co-planning session after having first practiced doing so via immersive simulation during a previous class session. It was also discovered that vicarious observational learning during immersive simulation positively impacted performance.

Planning for instruction is a complex and important task, requiring teachers to consider content, lesson objectives, and student learning. Teachers’ ability to attend to the complexity of planning differs with experience level and is especially difficult for novices and pre-service teachers. We examine the potential of co-planning during the internship experience to assist interns in making the transition from being a mathematics education student to becoming a mathematics teacher. We describe six strategies to facilitate co-planning between mentor teachers and interns. Implications for these strategies in other teaching contexts and relationships will be shared, as well as current and future research efforts.

Co-teaching is an increasingly used inclusive practice implemented by administrators to provide effective instruction in classrooms that have students with diverse learning needs. Coteaching has several different models; of these, "station teaching" can provide a meaningful way for general educators and special educators to work collaboratively in a science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) inclusive classroom.science. By using stations, both teachers are able to infuse best practices, targeted supports, and ongoing dialogue (divergent, inquiry, and civil discourse) into instruction.
