10 kW Inductive Wireless Power Transfer Prototype for EV Charging in Thailand

Abstract: The electric vehicle (EV) market is rising despite the COVID-19 pandemic in Thailand and the rest of the world. The Energy Policy and Planning Office, Ministry of Energy, is supporting the development of EV charging stations in Thailand. However, recent research published by Thais on the subject does not involve more than 1.24 kW wireless power transfer (WPT), whereas commercial EVs need at least 3.5 kW charging facilities. This study aims to develop a 10 kW WPT for EV charging in Thailand. The experimental pr… Show more

“…Inductive Wireless Power Transfer (IPT) has many applications, including electric vehicle (EV) charging. Thongpron et al, [122] has developed a 10 kW IPT prototype for EV charging. The prototype employs a resonant converter to match the impedance of the transmitting and receiving coils, improving power transfer efficiency.…”

“…An inductive wireless charging station prototype was successfully experimented in Thailand, which could achieve an efficiency of 90% with the use of Litz wire (a type of wire that has several strands of thinner wires) in both transmitting and receiving coils [17]. Wireless power transfer was simulated using Ansys for various coil geometries to calculate their efficiency, coupling coefficient and mutual inductance.…”

“…Wireless EV charging is a luxury operation for modern-lifestyle EVs that do not need physical coupling of the transmitter to the receiver [1,2,6]. The automatic processes of wireless EV charging are more suitable and safe for drivers, especially for women, the elderly or people with disabilities.…”

“…The automatic processes of wireless EV charging are more suitable and safe for drivers, especially for women, the elderly or people with disabilities. Moreover, automated wireless charging can include touching charging devices and surfaces, which may have some droplets of coronaviruses from the users [2,6]. A wireless EV charging system is an intelligent device developed for luxury customers.…”
