1. Notice of some new Forms of British Fresh-Water Diatomaceæ.

Abstract: The author stated that he had examined, more or less minutely, nearly 300 fresh-water gatherings, and that he had found in these very nearly all the known British species, besides a number not yet described. He mentioned that, from the want of figures, it was often difficult to know whether a form were new or not. Thus,Pinnularia latestriata, found by the author two years since in the Mull earth, had been considered as a new species by all British naturalists, as well as several foreign ones; yet in Ehrenberg'… Show more

“…The diatoms of the British Isles have been studied intensively for more than 150 years, resulting in several floras (sMiTh 1853, 1856, hEndEy 1964, harTLEy et al 1996, many taxonomic and ecological papers containing species barcode does not circumscribe a deme or species; rather, it helps to determine what name is applicable once a population or set of populations has been distinguished. However, molecular barcodes also have the advantage over type specimens that they are direct samples of the genotype and can be used immediately in preliminary estimates of genetic and phylogenetic relationships (e.g.…”

“…Gregory (1856) described and illustrated a new freshwater taxon, Pinnularia elginensis, which was subsequently transferred into Navicula by Ralfs (in Pritchard, 1861). Krammer & Lange‐Bertalot (1986) illustrated a lectotype specimen from BM 11751 (designated by R. Patrick), but also included specimens from BM 23510, which is the lectotype for Navicula tumida syn.…”

“…This was first described by Gregory (1856) as Pinnularia elginensis (lectotype= BM 11751) and was made a variety of Navicula dicephala by Cleve (1894 and 1838 (the "Infusionsthierchen"). Ehrenberg makes the following references to this species: in 1843, as N. dicephala; 1840, as Navicula (Pinnularia) dicephala; 1838, as N. dicephala and citing a paper of 1837 (which has not been checked) also calling it N. dicephala.…”
