1-Methylcyclopropene (MCP)-Containing Cellulose Paper Packaging for Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Preservation: A Review

Abstract: The freshness and safety of fruits and vegetables is important in our daily life. Paper products are often used for shipping, wrapping, and decoration in the retail for fruits and vegetables. When these paper products are modified with active substances, they can offer additional functions other than just packaging. Thus, introducing 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) into paper products can impart a preservation function for fruits and vegetables. 1-MCP is an excellent and eco-friendly inhibitor of ethylene that ca… Show more

“…Paper packaging is usually used for fruit and vegetables during transportation and product selling. 16 The additional function of a 1-methylcyclopropene inclusion complex (1-MCP IC) powder with a controlled-release system using coated paper is to delay ripening and to prolong the shelf life of fruit and vegetables. Furthermore, 1-MCP coated paper can reduce the cost of production compared with other materials.…”

“…Paper is a versatile and flexible material that can be used for printing, household products, and food packaging. [1,2] The versatility of paper is contributed by its properties, including its low density, good mechanical properties, excellent recyclability, and biodegradability. [3][4][5] But a major disadvantage of paper is its fibrous porous structure and thus poor barrier properties.…”
