The activities of major digestive hydrolases (proteases, amylase, lipase and esterases) along the intestine were studied in the burbot Lota lota (L.) using different methods of activity expression. The enzyme activities were determined both in the whole gut segments and in the isolated mucosa, and then expressed in terms of tissue mass and protein content in the samples. Further, the cumulative activities of these enzymes in the pyloric caeca were compared with those in the rest of the intestine to estimate the overall contribution of these regions to digestion. The data obtained suggest the essential role of the pyloric caeca in the digestion of the burbot. In addition, the variations in the pH values along the intestine and the changes in the enzyme activities with incubation temperature were examined. The study proved the method of enzyme activity expression to be a key factor influencing the outcome of the experiment.
Over recent decades, changes in zebrafish (Danio rerio) behaviour have become popular quantitative indicators in biomedical studies. The circadian rhythms of behavioural processes in zebrafish are known to enable effective utilization of energy and resources, therefore attracting interest in zebrafish as a research model. This review covers a variety of circadian behaviours in this species, including diurnal rhythms of spawning, feeding, locomotor activity, shoaling, light/dark preference, and vertical position preference. Changes in circadian activity during zebrafish ontogeny are reviewed, including ageing-related alterations and chemically induced variations in rhythmicity patterns. Both exogenous and endogenous sources of inter-individual variability in zebrafish circadian behaviour are detailed. Additionally, we focus on different environmental factors with the potential to entrain circadian processes in zebrafish. This review describes two principal ways whereby diurnal behavioural rhythms can be entrained: (i) modulation of organismal physiological state, which can have masking or enhancing effects on behavioural endpoints related to endogenous circadian rhythms, and (ii) modulation of period and amplitude of the endogenous circadian rhythm due to competitive relationships between the primary and secondary zeitgebers. In addition, different peripheral oscillators in zebrafish can be entrained by diverse zeitgebers. This complicated orchestra of divergent influences may cause variability in zebrafish circadian behaviours, which should be given attention when planning behavioural studies.
SummaryThe proteolytic activity in washings off the Triaenophorus nodulosus cestode tegument and the ability of the worms to inactivate proteolytic enzymes were studied. It was found that the major proteolytic activity in the washing samples is represented by the easily desorbed fraction most probably characterizing the activity of the host's enzymes. Serine proteinases are an essential part of these enzymes. It was shown that the worms' incubation medium and their homogenates can inhibit host proteinases and commercial trypsin samples. Suppressive activity of the incubation medium suggests that the inhibitors are rather spontaneously produced by the worms than induced by the presence of proteinases in the surrounding medium. The inhibitor produced by the cestode is hypothesized to be trypsin-specifi c.
In humans, hemispheric language dominance is, to some degree, associated with handedness. Significant associations have been reported between several other lateralized functions. Much less is known about the organization of cerebral asymmetries in nonhuman species and, in particular, whether the presence of reversed asymmetry of one function is associated with a reversal of other lateralized functions or, instead, if cognitive functions lateralize independently. In this study, we compare four measures of sensory and motor laterality in the same individuals in a sample of goldbelly topminnows. A significant association was found between two measures of eye preference and two measures of motor laterality, but sensory and motor asymmetries were uncorrelated. We found interesting that individuals preferring to examine a predator with the right eye tended to use the left eye to look at a shoal mate and the reverse was true for fish that monitored predators with the left eye. This complementarity of functions could be adaptively advantageous for a small social fish, because it allows an individual to monitor the movements of its shoal mates with one eye as the other eye remains free to scan the surroundings for the presence of predators.
