In this work we consider a generalized bilevel optimization framework for solving inverse problems. We introduce fractional Laplacian as a regularizer to improve the reconstruction quality, and compare it with the total variation regularization. We emphasize that the key advantage of using fractional Laplacian as a regularizer is that it leads to a linear operator, as opposed to the total variation regularization which results in a nonlinear degenerate operator. Inspired by residual neural networks, to learn the optimal strength of regularization and the exponent of fractional Laplacian, we develop a dedicated bilevel optimization neural network with a variable depth for a general regularized inverse problem. We also draw some parallels between an activation function in a neural network and regularization. We illustrate how to incorporate various regularizer choices into our proposed network. As an example, we consider tomographic reconstruction as a model problem and show an improvement in reconstruction quality, especially for limited data, via fractional Laplacian regularization. We successfully learn the regularization strength and the fractional exponent via our proposed bilevel optimization neural network. We observe that the fractional Laplacian regularization outperforms total variation regularization. This is specially encouraging, and important, in the case of limited and noisy data.

Ptychography is a popular imaging technique that combines diffractive imaging with scanning microscopy. The technique consists of a coherent beam that is scanned across an object in a series of overlapping positions, leading to reliable and improved reconstructions. Ptychographic microscopes allow for large fields to be imaged at high resolution at the cost of additional computational expense. In this work, we propose a multigrid-based optimization framework to reduce the computational burdens of large-scale ptychographic phase retrieval. Our proposed method exploits the inherent hierarchical structures in ptychography through tailored restriction and prolongation operators for the object and data domains. Our numerical results show that our proposed scheme accelerates the convergence of its underlying solver and outperforms the Ptychographic Iterative Engine (PIE), a workhorse in the optics community.

In a variety of modem applications there arises a need to tesseUate the domain into representative regions, called Voronoi cells. A particular type of such tessellations, called centroidal Voronoi tessellations or CVTs, are in big demand due to their optimality properties important for many applications. The availabUity of fast and reliable algorithms for their construction is crucial for their successful use in practical settings. This paper introduces a new multigrid algorithm for constructing CVTs that is based on the MG/Opt algorithm that was originally designed to solve large nonlinear optimization problems. Uniform convergence of the new method and its speedup comparing to existing techniques are demonstrated for linear and nonlinear densities for several Id and 2d problems, and O(fc) complexity estimation is provided for a problem with fc generators.

Fluorescence tomographic reconstruction, based on the detection of photons coming from fluorescent emission, can be used for revealing the internal elemental composition of a sample. On the other hand, conventional X-ray transmission tomography can be used for reconstructing the spatial distribution of the absorption coefficient inside a sample. In this work, we integrate both X-ray fluorescence and X-ray transmission data modalities and formulate a nonlinear optimization-based approach for reconstruction of the elemental composition of a given object. This model provides a simultaneous reconstruction of both the quantitative spatial distribution of all elements and the absorption effect in the sample. Mathematically speaking, we show that compared with the single-modality inversion (i.e., the X-ray transmission or fluorescence alone), the joint inversion provides a better-posed problem, which implies a better recovery. Therefore, the challenges in X-ray fluorescence tomography arising mainly from the effects of self absorption in the sample are partially mitigated. The use of this technique is demonstrated on the reconstruction of several synthetic samples.

Tomography can be used to reveal internal properties of a 3D object using any penetrating wave. Advanced tomographic imaging techniques, however, are vulnerable to both systematic and random errors associated with the experimental conditions, which are often beyond the capabilities of the state-of-the-art reconstruction techniques such as regularizations. Because they can lead to reduced spatial resolution and even misinterpretation of the underlying sample structures, these errors present a fundamental obstacle to full realization of the capabilities of next-generation physical imaging. In this work, we develop efficient and explicit recovery schemes of the most common experimental error: movement of the center of rotation during the experiment. We formulate new physical models to capture the experimental setup, and we devise new mathematical optimization formulations for reliable inversion of complex samples. We demonstrate and validate the efficacy of our approach on synthetic data under known perturbations of the center of rotation.
