The current study was designed to evaluate the hypolipidemic and renoprotective effects of methanolic extract of powdered Canscora decussata whole plant in the diabetic rabbits. Thirty rabbits were divided into five groups having 6 animals each including normal and diabetic controls groups, the remaining groups received methanolic extract in 400 and 600 mg/kg doses and another group got pioglitazone (3 mg/kg) for 30 days. Serum levels of triglycerides, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, albumin, globulin and total proteins were estimated by using commercially available kits. The results showed that extract significantly (p<0.01) decreased the raised parameters including triglyceride, total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol, atherogenic index, Coronary risk index up to normal values compared to diabetic rabbits. However, it significantly increased HDL-cholesterol, albumin, globulin and total protein levels. Therefore, it is suggested that methanolic extract of C. decussata exerts hypolipidemic and renoprotective effects in the alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits. Article Info
Background To explore the association between obesity and tooth wear among American adults and the role of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks consumption in explaining that association. Methods We analyzed data from 3541 adult participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Obesity was determined using the body mass index and tooth wear was assessed using the modified tooth wear index. Daily intake of four categories of drinks was estimated as the average (drinks/day) of two consecutive 24-h dietary recalls. The association between obesity and number of surfaces with moderate-to-severe tooth wear was assessed in hurdle models adjusting for sociodemographic factors, acid reflux medication, and dental insurance. Results Overweight and obese adults had more surfaces with moderate-to-severe tooth wear than those with normal body size, after adjusting for confounders. The consumption of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks explained part, but not all the above association. More specifically, the estimate for obesity was fully attenuated, whereas the estimate for overweight was slightly attenuated but remained significant. Conclusion Obesity was positively associated with tooth wear in American adults. This association was only partially accounted for by the consumption of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks, a common risk factor for both conditions. Practical implications Dentists must be aware of the health consequences of sugar-sweetened acidic drinks and advocate for reduction in consumption and/or substitution with healthier alternatives.
Objective: Nowadays antibacterial drugs resistance is major problem in the world. To overcome this problem, some novel derivates of doxycycline were synthesized by single step condensation reaction with ten different types of aromatic and aliphatic aldehydes and ketones in ethanol as solvent and acetic acid as catalyst. In these reactions, deprotonation of primary amine occurs that results in formation of imine. Methods: All the derivatives physically characterized and confirmed by analytical techniques i.e. FTIR and 1H NMR and 13C NMR. The derived compounds have exhibited significantly more active against both gram positive as well as gram negative bacterial strains as compared to parent drug. Results: Derived Schiff bases RDC2, RDC4 and RDC10 showed zone of inhibition against Bacillus subtilis as compared to doxycycline and derived Schiff bases RDC1, RDC2, RDC5, RDC6, RDC7 and RDC8 showed more zone of inhibition against Micrococcus luteus as compared to doxycycline. Conclusion: Doxycycline is among broad-spectrum tetracycline. The Schiff bases derived from doxycycline show significantly highly active against gram negative bacteria as compared to doxycycline. In future further study on these derived compounds will help in market new derivative of doxycycline, which will have more broad-spectrum activity than doxycycline.
Mucormycosis is an invasive and unyielding fungal disease of immunocompromised patients with a reported increase in incidence over last couple of decades. The close resemblance of clinical features of mucormycosis with that of bacterial necrotizing fasciitis can lead to misdiagnosis and thus delay in appropriate management. The case presented here involves a similar scenario when a middle-aged patient with multiple systemic problems reported to the tertiary care hospital 7 days after facial trauma from a road traffic accident. There was a purple black ulcerating lesion over left midface that was misdiagnosed and treated as a case of bacterial necrotizing fasciitis. Despite extensive debridement under general anesthesia and administration of parentral antibiotics, the patient failed to survive. The results of histopathological examination of the debrided tissue, that became available after the death of the patient showed, growth of broad aseptate hyphae characteristic of mucorales. Late presentation, multiple systemic diseases and missed diagnosis of the condition were the main factors that resulted in the death of the patient within 72 hours of presentation.Underlying immunocompromised states and late diagnosis of this condition remain the key issues that need to be addressed in developing countries. A high degree of clinical suspicion and aggressive diagnostic measures combined with prompt medical and surgical treatment are essential to improve the outcome.
