The ionospheric radio occultation measurements from Constellation Observing System for Meteorology, Ionosphere, and Climate (COSMIC) satellites during [2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012] are utilized to analyze variations of the hemispheric asymmetry in the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA) in solstice seasons. A hemispheric asymmetry index (A h ) is introduced to quantitatively characterize the relative interhemispheric asymmetry or north-south differences of the EIA crests. The seasonal, solar activity, and longitudinal dependences of the hemispheric asymmetry are investigated during these low to moderately high solar activity levels. Our main findings are as follows: (1) The transition of stronger crest from the winter to summer hemispheres generally took place during noon to afternoon hours (~11:00-14:00 LT), whereas the change of the EIA hemispheric asymmetry pattern toward a stronger summer crest actually started 2-3 h earlier.(2) Remarkable differences were observed in the EIA hemispheric asymmetry between June and December solstices. In June solstice, the transition from stronger winter to summer crests occurred later, and consequently, the duration with stronger winter crest lasted longer during the morning period. (3) In the afternoon hours, the magnitudes of relative interhemispheric asymmetry of EIA crests were obviously anticorrelated with the solar activity, while in the morning hours their solar activity dependence was weak. (4) Interhemispheric asymmetry of the crests and its transition time varied with longitudes. It is also found that the longitudinal and seasonal variations of the change rate of A h was generally consistent with the corresponding variations of hemispheric asymmetry in ion production rate. Our results indicate that the photochemical process may also play a role in the EIA hemispheric asymmetry, in addition to the important contribution from the transequatorial neutral wind and equatorial fountain effects.

The total electron content (TEC) data measured by the Jason, CHAMP, GRACE, and SAC-C satellites, the in situ electron densities from CHAMP and GRACE, and the vertical E × B drifts from the ROCSAT, have been utilized to examine the ionospheric response to the October 2003 superstorms. The combination of observations from multiple satellites provides a unique global view of ionospheric storm effects, especially over the Pacific Ocean and American regions, which were under sunlit conditions during the main phases of the October 2003 superstorms. The main results of this study are as follows: (1) There were substantial increases in TEC in the daytime at low and middle latitudes during both superstorms. (2) The enhancements were greater during the 30 October superstorm and occurred over a wider range of local times. (3) They also tended to peak at earlier local times during this second event. (4) These TEC enhancement events occurred at the local times when there were enhancements in the upward vertical drift. (5) The strong upward vertical drifts are attributed to penetration electric fields, suggesting that these penetration electric fields played a significant role in the electron density enhancements during these superstorms. Overall, the main contribution of this study is the simultaneous view of the storm time ionospheric response from multiple satellites, and the association of local time differences in ionospheric plasma response with measured vertical drift variations.

We report simultaneous global monitoring of a patch of ionization and in situ observation of ion upflow at the center of the polar cap region during a geomagnetic storm. Our observations indicate strong fluxes of upwelling O+ ions originating from frictional heating produced by rapid antisunward flow of the plasma patch. The statistical results from the crossings of the central polar cap region by Defense Meteorological Satellite Program F16–F18 from 2010 to 2013 confirm that the field‐aligned flow can turn upward when rapid antisunward flows appear, with consequent significant frictional heating of the ions, which overcomes the gravity effect. We suggest that such rapidly moving patches can provide an important source of upwelling ions in a region where downward flows are usually expected. These observations give new insight into the processes of ionosphere‐magnetosphere coupling.
