This study demonstrates that mineral redox buffer, an important concept in geology, can be used to manipulate the migration of nanoparticles and produce nanostructures of unexpected morphologies. Using a silica shell as a redox buffer, we show that iron oxide nanoparticles can be relocated from inside to the outer surface of the silica shell. The migration of iron oxide through silica was initiated by manipulation of the oxygen fugacity conditions at an elevated temperature. During the treatment, iron oxide was absorbed and then separated from the silica shell by the formation and then decomposition of iron silicate (Fe 2 SiO 4 ). Tuning the relative dimensions of the iron oxide core and silica shell allows control of the shape of the iron oxide−silica composite structures. It is believed that the discovery of the nanoscale redox buffering effect can be extended to control the morphological configuration of other multivalent metal oxide nanocomposite structures by this particular type of template synthesis through manipulation of the chemical-transport properties of nanoscale templates.

Carbonate mineralization microbe is a microorganism capable of decomposing the substrate in the metabolic process to produce the carbonate, which then forms calcium carbonate with calcium ions. By taking advantage of this process, contaminative uranium tailings can transform to solid cement, where calcium carbonate plays the role of a binder. In this paper, we have studied the morphology of mineralized crystals by controlling the mineralization time and adding different concentrations of montmorillonite (MMT). At the same time, we also studied the effect of carbonate mineralized cementation uranium tailings by controlling the amount of MMT. The results showed that MMT can regulate the crystal morphology of calcium carbonate. What is more, MMT can balance the acidity and ions in the uranium tailings; it also can reduce the toxicity of uranium ions on microorganisms. In addition, MMT filling in the gap between the uranium tailings made the cement body more stable. When the amount of MMT is 6%, the maximum strength of the cement body reached 2.18 MPa, which increased by 47.66% compared with that the sample without MMT. Therefore, it is reasonable and feasible to use the MMT to regulate the biocalcium carbonate cemented uranium tailings.

This study provided the latest comparative genomic analysis on Stenotrophomonas maltophilia strains and focused on analyzing their genomic features that allow them to adapt to natural environments. In this study, we set S. maltophilia W18 as a typical PAH-degrading strain of this species. By discussing the genomic adaptative features of degrading PAH, we can predict genomic adaptative features of other S. maltophilia PAH-degrading strains since the core function of this species is stable.
