The capture of radioactive I 2 vapor from nuclear waste under industrial operating conditions remains a challenging task, as the practical industrial conditions of high temperature (≥150 °C) and low I 2 concentration (∼150 ppmv) are unfavorable for I 2 adsorption. We report a novel guanidinium-based covalent organic framework (COF), termed TGDM, which can efficiently capture I 2 under industrial operating conditions. At 150 °C and 150 ppmv I 2 , TGDM exhibits an I 2 uptake of ∼30 wt %, which is significantly higher than that of the industrial silver-based adsorbents such as Ag@MOR (17 wt %) currently used in the nuclear fuel reprocessing industry. Characterization and theoretical calculations indicate that among the multiple types of adsorption sites in TGDM, only ionic sites can bond to I 2 through strong Coulomb interactions under harsh conditions. The abundant ionic groups of TGDM account for its superior I 2 capture performance compared to various benchmark adsorbents. In addition, TGDM exhibits exceptionally high chemical and thermal stabilities that fully meet the requirements of practical radioactive I 2 capture (high-temperature, humid, and acidic environment) and differentiate it from other ionic COFs. Furthermore, TGDM has excellent recyclability and low cost, which are unavailable for the current industrial silver-based adsorbents. These advantages make TGDM a promising candidate for capturing I 2 vapor during nuclear fuel reprocessing. This strategy of incorporating chemically stable ionic guanidine moieties in COF would stimulate the development of new adsorbents for I 2 capture and related applications.

Introducing the chiral spacers to two-dimensional (2D) lead halide perovskites (LHPs) enables them to exhibit circularly polarized photoluminescence (CPPL), which could have applications in chiral-optics and spintronics. Despite that a great deal of effort has been made in this field, the reported polarization degree of CPPL at ambient conditions is still very limited, and the integration of multiple functionalities also remains to be explored. Here we report the structures, CPPL, and piezoelectric energy harvesting properties of chiral 2D LHPs, [R-1-(4-bromophenyl)­ethylaminium]2PbI4 (R-[BPEA]2PbI4) and [S-1-(4-bromophenyl)­ethylaminium]2PbI4 (S-[BPEA]2PbI4). Our results show that these chiral perovskites are direct bandgap semiconductors and exhibit CPPL centered at ∼513 nm with a maximum degree of polarization of up to 11.0% at room temperature. In addition, the unique configurational arrangement of the chiral spacers is found to be able to reduce the interlayer π–π interactions and consequently result in strong electron–phonon coupling. Furthermore, the intrinsic chirality of both R-[BPEA]2PbI4 and S-[BPEA]2PbI4 enables them to be piezoelectric active, and their composite films can be applied to generate voltages and currents up to ∼0.6 V and ∼1.5 μA under periodic impacting with a strength of 2 N, respectively. This work not only reports a high degree of CPPL but also demonstrates piezoelectric energy harvesting behavior for realizing multifunctionalities in chiral 2D LHPs.

Hybrid organic−inorganic perovskite (HOIP) ferroelectrics are attracting considerable interest because of their high performance, ease of synthesis, and lightweight. However, the intrinsic thermodynamic origins of their ferroelectric transitions remain insufficiently understood. Here, we identify the nature of the ferroelectric phase transitions in displacive [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Mn-(N 3 ) 3 ] and order−disorder type [(CH 3 ) 2 NH 2 ][Mn(HCOO) 3 ] via spatially resolved structural analysis and ab initio lattice dynamics calculations. Our results demonstrate that the vibrational entropy change of the extended perovskite lattice drives the ferroelectric transition in the former and also contributes importantly to that of the latter along with the rotational entropy change of the A-site. This finding not only reveals the delicate atomic dynamics in ferroelectric HOIPs but also highlights that both the local and extended fluctuation of the hybrid perovskite lattice can be manipulated for creating ferroelectricity by taking advantages of their abundant atomic, electronic, and phononic degrees of freedom.

The structural reconstruction at the crystal layer edges of 2D lead halide perovskites (LHPs) leads to unique edge states (ES), which are manifested by prolonged carrier lifetime and reduced emission energy. These special ES can effectively enhance the optoelectronic performance of devices, but their intrinsic origin and working mechanism remain elusive. Here it is demonstrated that the ES of a family of 2D Ruddlesden–Popper LHPs [BA2CsPb2Br7, BA2MAPb2Br7, and BA2MA2Pb3Br10 (BA = butylammonium; MA = methylammonium)] arise from the rotational symmetry elevation of the PbBr6 octahedra dangling at the crystal layer edges. These dangling octahedra give rise to localized electronic states that enable an effective transport of electrons from the interior to layer edges, and the population of electrons in both the interior states and the ES can be manipulated via controlling the external fields. Moreover, the abundant phonons, activated by the dangling octahedra, can interact with electrons to facilitate radiative recombination, counterintuitive to the suppressive role commonly observed in conventional semiconductors. This work unveils the intrinsic atomistic and electronic origins of ES in 2D LHPs, which can stimulate the exploration of ES‐based exotic optoelectronic properties and the corresponding design of high‐performance devices for these emergent low‐dimensional semiconductors.

One-step harvest of high-purity light hydrocarbons without the desorption process represents an advanced and highly efficient strategy for the purification of target substances. The separation and purification of acetylene (C2H2) from carbon dioxide (CO2) by CO2-selective adsorbents are urgently demanded yet are very challenging owing to their similar physicochemical properties. Here, we employ the pore chemistry strategy to adjust the pore environment by immobilizing polar groups into an ultramicroporous metal–organic framework (MOF), achieving one-step manufacture of high-purity C2H2 from CO2/C2H2 mixtures. Embedding methyl groups into prototype stable MOF (Zn-ox-trz) not only changes the pore environment but also improves the discrimination of guest molecules. The methyl-functionalized Zn-ox-mtz thus exhibits the benchmark reverse CO2/C2H2 uptake ratio of 12.6 (123.32/9.79 cm3 cm–3) and an exceptionally high equimolar CO2/C2H2 selectivity of 1064.9 at ambient conditions. Molecular simulations reveal that the synergetic effect of pore confinement and surfaces decorated with methyl groups provides high recognition of CO2 molecules through multiple van der Waals interactions. The column breakthrough experiments suggest that Zn-ox-mtz dramatically achieved the one-step purification capacity of C2H2 from the CO2/C2H2 mixture with a record C2H2 productivity of 2091 mmol kg–1, surpassing all of the CO2-selective adsorbents reported so far. In addition, Zn-ox-mtz exhibits excellent chemical stability under different pH values of aqueous solutions (pH = 1–12). Moreover, the highly stable framework and excellent inverse selective CO2/C2H2 separation performance showcase its promising application as a C2H2 splitter for industrial manufacture. This work paves the way to developing reverse-selective adsorbents for the challenging gas separation process.
