Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has been developing tubular type SOFC since 1984. With the support of NEDO during the fiscal years 2003 to 2004, some materials have been investigated in order to reduce resistance. The cell tube which is applied advanced materials had been developed, and was operated at 900{degree sign}C, 0.4MPa, 300 mA/cm2. Its output density of 0.21W/cm2 was achieved. The consignment research of NEDO is continued from 2005 to 2007. In this project, we are now developing a simulation technology of performance in order to optimize the cell tube configuration and advanced materials for a high power density cell tube. In 2006, a cell tube that was optimized by advanced simulation technology was developed. The cell tube was operated at 900°C, 0.6MPa, 750mA/cm2. Its output density of 0.5W/cm2 was achieved. This paper reports the current status of improvement of high power density tubular type SOFC at MHI.
