[1] The results from simultaneous observations of the nighttime transequatorial propagation (TEP) of HF radio waves between Australia and Japan and the GPS scintillation measurements in south China and Vietnam are presented in this paper. The results showed that there was good correspondence between the nighttime eastward traveling off-great circle propagation (OGCP) of broadcasting waves of Radio Australia from Shepparton, Australia, measured at Oarai, Japan, and the scintillations in GPS radio waves at Hainan, China. This shows that the nighttime eastward traveling OGCP in HF TEP is caused by a large-scale ionospheric structure associated with a plasma bubble. The zonal drift velocities of the large-scale ionospheric structure estimated by the change in the direction of arrival of the OGCP were similar to those of the small-scale irregularities associated with plasma bubbles measured by the GPS scintillation spaced-receiver technique. Our results show that the HF TEP measurement is quite useful for monitoring the plasma bubble occurrence over a wide area and for forecasting the arrival of the plasma bubble at places located to the east of it.

An unseasonal equatorial plasma bubble (EPB) event over South‐East Asia was observed on July 22, 2014 that has not been studied before. An investigation into this event is presented with the 26th July, 2014 as a comparison, non‐bubble day. The 22nd July EPB event occurred in the late post‐sunset sector and was associated with a small upward plasma drift. This event was highlighted using a new filter on the SCINDA S4 data. Ionosonde data show that sporadic E was present during the growth period for the EPB event. Modeling results from Thermosphere‐Ionosphere Electrodynamics (TEC) Global Circulation Model were used to conduct a numerical experiment investigating the direct effect of sporadic E on the linear R‐T growth rate. It was shown that sporadic E located in the correct latitude and local time can increase the linear growth rate. The seeding conditions were investigated using TEC data from Patumwan, Thailand. Wave‐like structures were observed for both days of interest, with larger amplitudes on 22nd July compared with the 26th July. Finally, simulations using the high‐resolution model PBMOD showed that for forcing from above conditions similar to the days of interest, EPBs would form in the presence of large seed perturbations. Therefore, it is likely that this unseasonal event was caused by large seed perturbations in TEC.

This paper presents the variations of the rate of change of Total Electron Content (TEC) index (ROTI), characterizing the occurrence of ionospheric plasma irregularities over Vietnam and neighboring countries in the Southeast Asian region using the continuous GPS data during the 2008-2018 period. The results showed that the occurrence of strong ROTI in all stations is maximum in equinox months March/April and September/October and depends on solar activity. The ROTI is weak during periods of low solar activity and strong during periods of high solar activity. There is an asymmetry between the two equinoxes. During maximum and declining phases of 2014-2016, occurrence rates in March equinox are larger than in September equinox, but during the descending period of 2010-2011, the occurrence rates in September equinox at almost all stations are larger than in March equinox. The correlation coefficients between the monthly occurrence rate of irregularities and the F10.7 solar index at the stations in the equatorward EIA crest region are higher than at those in the magnetic equatorial and the poleward EIA crest regions. The irregularity occurrence is high in the pre-midnight sector, maximum between 2000 LT to 2200 LT. The maximum irregularity occurrence is located around 4-5° degrees in latitude equator-ward away from the anomaly crests.
