HighlightsStump appendicitis is a rare presentation and therefore presents as a diagnostic dilemma.A PubMed search was conducted to identify cases of stump appendicitis following appendectomy. We report a case of a 72 year old female who presents 7 years post appendectomy with stump appendicitis.Systematic review of 61 cases were analyzed and outcomes highlighted.
HighlightsKnowledge about colonic perforation secondary to acute pancreatitis has been limited to a few case reports, thus diagnostic and management dilemmas continue to persist. The exact pathogenesis by which pancreatic pseudocysts rupture into the colon is unknown. There have been several purported theories. The management of colonic complications secondary to severe acute pancreatitis relies on a high index of suspicion, as the clinical presentation in non-specific, varied and can occur late in the disease process.
Melanoma is an aggressive type of cancer that has significant metastatic potential. Most commonly, distant melanoma metastases are identified in the lung, liver and brain. Metastatic melanoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare and is usually associated with widespread gastrointestinal deposits which purports a poor prognosis. Whilst an uncommon site of melanoma metastases, it accounts for 50% of all tumour metastases to the gallbladder. There are a small number of case reports and case series that describe different manifestations of melanoma metastases to the gallbladder. We report the case of a patient who presented with acute cholecystitis on a background of cholelithiasis and underwent a laparoscopic cholecystectomy with histopathology identifying gallbladder metastasis from malignant melanoma.
Emphysematous pancreatitis (EP) is a rare and severe complication of acute pancreatitis carrying a high mortality with only a handful of case reports and small studies reporting these cases and their management. The presence of emphysematous pancreatitis is often indicative of infected pancreatic necrosis with the mainstay of treatment being pancreatic necrosectomy; however there are cases where it may be appropriate to have a trial of conservative management, and there is a small body of evidence to support this. This paper describes a case of an 87-year-old male with acute emphysematous pancreatitis successfully managed with conservative cares.
HighlightsMetastatic gastric carcinoma involving the appendix presenting as acute appendicitis is very rare.Gastric cancer with peritoneal dissemination has a very poor prognosis. To date there has been no other reports of metastatic gastric cancer and a synchronous carcinoid tumour co-existing within an inflamed appendix.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
