Between August 2003 and April 2005, 300 ASR metal-on-metal resurfacing hip endoprostheses were implanted by the first author and a fellow surgeon. The mean age at surgery was 56.8 years (18-75.9 years) and mean body mass index was 27.6 kg/m2 (range, 19-41 kg/m2). The mean follow-up time was 202 days. The mean Harris hip score improved from 44 pre-operatively to 89 at 3 months post-operatively. In total, eight (2.7 per cent) cases [five neck fractures (1.66 per cent) and three cup revisions (1 per cent)] were revised. Two neck fractures occurred within a group of seven cases of femoral neck notching detected postoperatively; one neck fracture occurred out of two cases of incomplete seating of the femoral implant. A significantly higher (p < 0.001) failure rate was observed for patients who had undergone a previous osteosynthesis of the proximal femur (three revisions in a group of 15 patients). Revision cases had a significantly greater body mass index (p = 0.031). A learning curve was evident from the reduction in revisions from 5 in the first 100 surgical procedures to 2 in the next 100 and 1 in the last 100. We study polynomial endomorphisms F of C N which are locally finite in the following sense: the vector space generated byWe show that such endomorphisms exhibit similar features to linear endomorphisms: they satisfy the Jacobian Conjecture, have vanishing polynomials, admit suitably defined minimal and characteristic polynomials, and the invertible ones admit a Dunford decomposition into "semisimple" and "unipotent" constituents. We also explain a relationship with linear recurrent sequences and derivations. Finally, we give particular attention to the special cases where F is nilpotent and where N = 2.

Physical unclonable functions ͑PUFs͒ can be used as a cost-effective means to store cryptographic key material in an unclonable way. In coating PUFs, keys are generated from capacitance measurements of a coating containing many randomly distributed particles with different dielectric constants. We introduce a physical model of coating PUFs by simplifying the capacitance sensors to a parallel plate geometry. We estimate the amount of information that can be extracted from the coating. We show that the inherent entropy is proportional to ͱ n͑log n͒ 3/2 , where n is the number of particles that fit between the capacitor plates in a straight line. However, measurement noise may severely reduce the amount of information that can actually be extracted in practice. In the noisy regime the number of extractable bits is, in fact, a decreasing function of n. We derive an optimal value for n as a function of the noise amplitude, the PUF geometry, and the dielectric constants.
a b s t r a c tIt is well-known that an element of the linear group GL n (C) is semisimple if and only if its conjugacy class is Zariski closed. The aim of this paper is to show that the same result holds for the group of complex plane polynomial automorphisms.
