In the absence of observed data from Solar radiation (Sr), it is possible to estimate it using mathematical models. In general, the models vary in degree of complexity and the adjustment coefficients, and these must be calibrated to the place of interest to obtain the best performance. In this regard, the present work aims to evaluate the performance of simplified models of solar radiation in obtaining reference evapotranspiration. The data were obtained from the automatic meteorological station of the National Meteorological Institute (Inmet), located in Santa Maria -RS, Brazil. In the estimates of global solar radiation and its influence on reference evapotranspiration, ten models were evaluated, five models with the coefficients calibrated and five models, with the coefficients determined by the authors. It was observed that all the models studied presented performance index above 0.82, indicating "optimal" performance. Thus, both calibration and non-calibration models to obtain Sr do not interfere with ETo estimation. Therefore, given the impossibility of obtaining Sr data in meteorological stations, it is possible to use any of the models analyzed. Renewable energies are alternatives to replace fossil fuels and are crucial for the sustainability of the agricultural sector, besides being an important alternative for pumping water in irrigation. Thus, understanding revenues and expenses is fundamental in economic feasibility. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess the behavior of economic indicators in off-grid solar energy system for irrigation based on different scenarios. Photovoltaic projects were developed for different irrigation powers ranging from 0.736 to 22.1 kW, and the costs for implementation and operation, as well as the occurrence of economy of scale were evaluated, and the levelized cost of energy for each power analyzed was determined. In addition, sensitivity analyses were performed, considering the variation in product price and investment cost, to demonstrate the responses in relation to economic indicators. Photovoltaic energy projects showed increasing costs with the increase in power, and the normalized cost per kW followed an economy of scale, while the levelized cost of energy showed feasibility, except for the power of 22.1 kW. The sensitivity analyses showed profitability for the analyzed configurations.
The use of crop rotation in hydromorphic soils has been intensified in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Due to the difficult management of these soils, the use of irrigation is fundamental to increase the reliability of these production ecosystems. The present study aimed to evaluate the growth and yield components of corn under different managements of furrow irrigation. The study was conducted in Alegrete/RS in the experimental area of the Farroupilha Federal Institute during the 2017/2018 season. Two factors were evaluated: five managements of furrow irrigation, with a control (not irrigated) and 0, 25, 50 and 100% of the time required to replace the irrigation depth up to field capacity, and the influence of plant position relative to the total length of the furrow, at 0, 25 and 50 meters from its beginning. During the growth stage of corn, its LAI showed better performance for the three collections, at 34, 54 and 76 DAS, and plant height and shoot dry matter showed differences at 76 DAS in treatments that received irrigation. Yield components such as number of grains per ear, harvest index and grain yield were influenced by the use of irrigation, whereas water use efficiency did not differ between the use of irrigation and the control treatment. Lastly, best performances of application efficiency were found in treatments with 0% and 25% of the time required to replace the irrigation depth.
Water flow rate measurements are important for monitoring the irrigation practice. It is essential to find the real value of this variable using alternative low-cost methods which are easy to use or readily available. This study aimed to perform a comparative analysis among different methodologies for determining the flow rate in water pumping systems. Seven methodologies were analyzed, with 13 tests each. Three tests were done for adjustment and ten to test the equations. The correlation between the observed value and the values obtained by the methodologies was performed for the adjustment. The equations were subsequently used to obtain the estimated flow rate for comparison with the observed values. The comparative analysis was performed through the following statistical indicators: Precision Index, Agreement Index, Performance index, Root mean square deviation and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency. The methodology which showed the best adjustment in the flow estimation was the U-tube vacuometer. The pressure showed the best general performance among the tested parameters with the Tensiometer, Bourdon vacuum gauge and U-tube vacuum gauge instruments.
The study aims to quantify the production costs of maize and sorghum crops under rainfed and irrigated conditions for the generation of ethanol and to evaluate the economic feasibility in different scenarios of marketing price. Two experiments were carried out in the years 2019/2020 and 2020/2021, in an experimental area at the Federal University of Santa Maria, Santa Maria, RS, Brazil. The experiment was in strip plots, in a randomized block design and four replicates. Three irrigation depths, 0, 50 and 100% of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo), as first factor, and two maize cultivars and one grain sorghum cultivar as second factor, using 45 scenarios. The use of full irrigation (100% of ETo) reduces the production costs of the liter of ethanol by 15 and 17.89% and increases ethanol production by 44.18 and 48.25% for maize and grain sorghum crops, respectively. For the market price of R$ 2.00 L-1, the grain sorghum does not show good performance, with negative net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return (IRR). The sale price of R$ 4.00 L-1 and full irrigation is the best economic scenario, with values of NPV of R$ 90,356.93, IRR of 33.83%, benefit/cost ratio (B/C) of 2.28, profitability index (PI) of 3.99 and payback of three years. Maize is economically viable for ethanol production in all scenarios. Full irrigation and market price of R$ 4.00 L-1 represent the best economic scenario, with mean values for NPV of R$ 204,381.68, IRR of 63.35%, B/C of 2.96, PI of 8.67 and payback of 1.58 years, among the cultivars.
