Substantial progress in flexible or stretchable electronics over the past decade has extensively impacted various technologies such as wearable devices, displays and automotive electronics for smart cars. An important challenge is the reliability of these deformable devices under thermal stress. Different coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) between plastic substrates and the device components, which include multiple inorganic layers of metals or ceramics, induce thermal stress in the devices during fabrication processes or long-term operations with repetitions of thermal cyclic loading-unloading, leading to device failure and reliability degradation. Here, we report an unconventional approach to form photo-patternable, transparent cellulose nanofiber (CNF) hybrid films as flexible and stretchable substrates to improve device reliability using simultaneous electrospinning and spraying. The electrospun polymeric backbones and sprayed CNF fillers enable the resulting hybrid structure to be photolithographically patternable as a negative photoresist and thermally and mechanically stable, presenting outstanding optical transparency and low CTE. We also formed stretchable origami substrates using the CNF hybrid that are composed of rigid support fixtures and elastomeric joints, exploiting the photo-patternability. A demonstration of transparent organic light-emitting diodes and touchscreen panels on the hybrid film suggests its potential for use in next-generation electronics.

Compared with the large plastic deformation observed in ductile metals and organic materials, inorganic semiconductors have limited plasticity (<0.2%) due to their intrinsic bonding characters, restricting their widespread applications in stretchable electronics. Herein, the solution‐processed synthesis of ductile α‐Ag2S thin films and fabrication of all‐inorganic, self‐powered, and stretchable memory devices, is reported. Molecular Ag2S complex solution is synthesized by chemical reduction of Ag2S powder, fabricating wafer‐scale highly crystalline Ag2S thin films. The thin films show stretchability due to the intrinsic ductility, sustaining the structural integrity at a tensile strain of 14.9%. Moreover, the fabricated Ag2S‐based resistive random access memory presents outstanding bipolar switching characteristics (Ion/Ioff ratio of ≈105, operational endurance of 100 cycles, and retention time >106 s) as well as excellent mechanical stretchability (no degradation of properties up to stretchability of 52%). Meanwhile, the device is highly durable under diverse chemical environments and temperatures from −196 to 300 °C, especially maintaining the properties for 168 h in 85% relative humidity and 85 °C. A self‐powered memory combined with motion sensors for use as a wearable healthcare monitoring system is demonstrated, offering the potential for designing high‐performance wearable electronics that are usable in daily life in a real‐world setting.

The mechanical flexibility of perovskite solar cells as well as high power conversion efficiency is attracting increasing attention. In addition to existing empirical approaches, such as cyclic bending tests, in this study we report the tensile properties of the perovskite materials themselves. Measuring the tensile properties of free-standing perovskite materials is critical because (1) tensile properties represent the realistic mechanical properties of the film-type perovskite layer in the solar cells including the effects of various defects, and (2) deformation behavior of the perovskite layer at any deformed state of the solar cells can be analyzed using solid mechanics with the tensile properties as input. Critical bending radius of MAPbI 3 -based flexible solar cells is found to be between 0.5 and 1.0 mm by the decrease in power conversion efficiency during cyclic bending deformation. This finding agrees well with the critical bending radius of 0.66 mm determined based on the elastic deformation limit of 1.17% for MAPbI 3 found by in situ tensile testing. Scanning electron microscopy observations and hole-nanoindentation tests suggest that the formation of coarse cracks in the perovskite layers is the primary cause of the decrease in power conversion efficiency observed in flexible perovskite solar cells.

BORIS is a member of the cancer-testis gene family that comprises genes normally expressed only in testis but abnormally activated in different malignancies. In this study, we examined the relation between BORIS expression and gastric cancer, which is the most common cancer in Korea. Abnormal BORIS expression in the patient's gastric cancer tissues was observed. We checked the methylation status of the gene in gastric cancer tissue, because the regulation by methylation in its CpG islands is well known for BORIS. However, there was no correlation between the methylation status and gene expression. Then, we focused on the minisatellites (variable number of tandem repeats) of BORIS as another possible regulator for this abnormal expression. Previously, we reported the characterization of BORIS-MS2 and determined the frequency of alleles in cancer patients. A case-control study was performed using DNA from 774 controls and 496 patients with gastric cancer. There was no significant difference observed in the overall distribution of minisatellite alleles. These results suggest that additional different regulators for the abnormal BORIS expression in gastric cancer may exist. Additionally, we performed a segregation analysis of BORIS-MS2 with genomic DNA obtained from two generations of five families and from three generations of two families. BORIS-MS2 alleles were transmitted through meiosis following Mendelian inheritance, which suggests that this polymorphic minisatellite could be a useful marker for paternity mapping and DNA fingerprinting.
