The Z --> E photoisomerization and fluorescence quantum yields for the wild-type green fluorescence protein (GFP) chromophore (p-HBDI) and its meta- and para-amino analogues (m-ABDI and p-ABDI) in aprotic solvents (hexane, THF, and acetonitrile) and protic solvents (methanol and 10-20% H(2)O in THF) are reported. The dramatic decrease in the quantum yields on going from aprotic to protic solvents indicates the important role of solvent-solute hydrogen bonding in the nonradiative decay pathways. The enhanced fluorescence of m-ABDI is also discussed.

Novel ter(9,9-diarylfluorene)s were synthesized by a Suzuki-coupling reaction of 2-bromofluorene (1) and 2,7-fluorenediboronic ester derivatives (3) with high isolated yields (63-86%). The X-ray structure analysis of ter(9,9'-spirobifluorene) (4aa) revealed that the conjugated chromophore adopts a helical conformation. This conformation effectively releases the steric interaction between the fluorene moieties and prevents inter-chromophore interactions. The introduction of aryl groups at the C9 position of fluorene was highly beneficial to the thermal and morphological stability of these oligomers. These terfluorenes exhibit intense blue fluorescence with excellent quantum yields both in solution ( approximately 100%) and in solid state (66-90%), and possess interesting reversible redox properties. Highly efficient blue light-emitting OLED devices were fabricated using 4aa and 4cc as emitters as well as hole transporters. The devices exhibit low turn-on voltage ( approximately 3 V) and high EL external quantum efficiency (2.5-3%).

The unconstrained green fluorescence protein (GFP)-like chromophore m-DMABDI displays a high solvatofluorochromicity in aprotic solvents, but the fluorescence is quenched in protic solvents. According to the site-specific intramolecularly hydrogen-bonded analogs 1OH and 2OH, the hydrogen bonding to the carbonyl oxygen is more important than that to the imino nitrogen of the imidazolinone group in the fluorescence quenching.

White electroluminescent (EL) emission from single-layered solid-state light-emitting electrochemical cells (LECs) based on host-guest cationic iridium complexes has been successfully demonstrated. The devices show white EL spectra (Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage coordinates ranging from (x, y) = (0.45, 0.40) to (0.35, 0.39) at 2.9-3.3 V with high color rendering indices up to 80. Peak external quantum efficiency and peak power efficiency of the white LEC reach 4% and 7.8 lm/W, respectively. These results suggest that white LECs based on host-guest cationic transition metal complexes may be a promising alternative for solid-state lighting technologies.

(2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-Octaethyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphinato)iron(III) chloride FeIII(OETPP)Cl and (2,3,7,8,12,13,17,18-octamethyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphinato)iron(III) chloride FeIII(OMTPP)Cl complexes have been synthesized and characterized by 1H NMR and X-ray crystallography. Both molecules are severely nonplanar and assume saddle shapes in solid state. Variable-temperature 1H NMR studies confirm that the conformational distortions are maintained in solution with ΔG ⧧ = 15.8 and 10.1 kcal/mol for ring inversion for Fe(OETPP)Cl and Fe(OMTPP)Cl, respectively. EPR (g ⊥ = 5.2−5.3 at 77 K), magnetic moments (μeff = 4.7−5.2 μB at 300 K), and structural data (Fe−Np = 2.03 Å, Fe−Cl = 2.24−2.25 Å) all indicate that unlike high-spin FeIII(TPP)Cl and FeIII(OEP)Cl (S = 5/2), FeIII(OETPP)Cl and FeIII(OMTPP)Cl these complexes are of the uncommon quantum-mixed S = 5/2, 3/2 intermediate-spin state. Saddle-shaped ring deformations lower the symmetries of the complexes into C 2v . Other than the nonaxial symmetric EPR spectra of both complexes, 1H NMR spectrum of FeIII(OETPP)Cl shows large asymmetry to the methylene proton shifts. Certain cytochromes c‘ from photosynthetic bacteria reported to be of similar quantum-mixed intermediate-spin and showed EPR signals of rhombic symmetry have been noted to be with saddle-shaped deformations. These anomalous spin states and electronic structure asymmetry are ascribed to the ring deformation of the porphyrin macrocycle.

The spectroscopic and photophysical properties of three gold( 1)-acetylide complexes [N (PPh,),] -[Au(CzCPh),], [Au(PPh,)(C-CPh)] and [{Au(C-CPh)},(p-dppe)] [dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenyIphosphino)ethane] are described. X-Ray crystal analysis of the latter showed a weak metal-metal interaction in the solid state with the shortest Au -Au separation being 3.1 53(2) A. The gold(1)acetylide complexes have long-lived and emissive ,(n,n*) excited states in solutions at room temperature. The photoreaction of [Au( PPh,) (C-CPh)] with methyl viologen has been investigated by Stern-Volmer quenching and flash-photolysis experiments.

An alternative string theory: The current‐versus‐potential behavior of metal atom strings (Ni, Co, Cr) is dependent on the strength of the d‐orbital coupling along the metal atom chain. Penta‐ and heptachromium strings each exhibit two sets of primary I–V curves, which depend on whether the CrCr bonds alternate and are localized, or are delocalized (see picture).

Extensive investigations of asymmetric intermolecular cyclopropanation of terminal alkenes with diazoacetates catalyzed by ruthenium porphyrin [Ru(P*)(CO)(EtOH)] (1, H2P = 5,10,15,20-tetrakis[(1S,4R,5R,8S)-1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8-octahydro-1,4:5,8-dimethanoanthracene-9-yl]porphyrin) and the application of catalyst 1 to asymmetric intramolecular cyclopropanation of allylic or homoallylic diazoacetates are described. The intermolecular cyclopropanation of styrene and its derivatives with ethyl diazoacetate afforded the corresponding cyclopropyl esters in up to 98% ee with high trans/cis ratios of up to 36 and extremely high catalyst turnovers of up to 1.1 x 10(4). Examination of the effects of temperature, diazoacetate, solvent, and substituent in the intermolecular cyclopropanation reveals that (i) both enantioselectivity and trans selectivity increase with decreasing temperature, (ii) sterically encumbered diazoacetates N2CHCO2R, such as R = Bu(t), and donor solvents, such as diethyl ether and tetrahydrofuran, are beneficial to the trans selectivity, and (iii) electron-donating para substituents on styrene accelerate the cyclopropanations, with the log(k(X)/k(H)) vs sigma(+) plot for para-substituted styrenes p-X-C6H4CH=CH2 (X = MeO, Me, Cl, CF3) exhibiting good linearity with a small negative rho(+) value of -0.44 +/- 0.09. In the case of intramolecular cyclopropanation, complex 1 promoted the decomposition of a series of allylic diazoacetates to form the cyclopropyl lactones in up to 85% ee, contributing the first efficient metalloporphyrin catalyst for an asymmetric intramolecular cyclopropanation. Both the inter- and intramolecular cyclopropanations were proposed to proceed via a reactive chiral ruthenium carbene intermediate. The enantioselectivities in these processes were rationalized on the basis of the X-ray crystal structures of closely related stable chiral carbene complexes [Ru(P*)(CPh2)] (2) and [Ru(P*)(C(Ph)CO2CH2CH=CH2)] (3) obtained from reactions of complex 1 with N2CPh2 and N2C(Ph)CO2CH2CH=CH2, respectively.
