In HIV-1-infected, antiretroviral-naive women without symptoms of pelvic inflammatory disease infection, abnormal vaginal flora and inflammatory cells in the endometrium affected HIV-1 shedding from the lower genital tract. These data suggest that both the upper and lower genital tracts contribute to female HIV-1 genital shedding.
This article is a review of the research on ultrasound contrast agents in general imaging. While general imaging contrast agent applications are still undergoing investigation and waiting FDA approval in the United States, they are approved for clinical use in Europe and other countries. The contrast microbubble properties are described, including their nonlinear behavior and destruction properties. Imaging techniques like harmonic imaging, pulse inversion, power pulse inversion, agent detection imaging, microvascular imaging, and flash contrast imaging are explained. A connection is made between the aforementioned imaging techniques and the different contrast agents available. The blood flow appearance of different liver tumors in the presence of contrast agents is demonstrated with examples.
We describe a fiber-optic interferometer that employs wavelength changes to achieve maximum sensitivity. Wavelength changes are induced by adjusting the operating temperature of the laser, eliminating the need for an actuator to vary the spacing between the sensing fiber and the object to be monitored. The instrument and techniques described are suitable for cryogenic, high vacuum applications such as magnetic resonance force microscopy, where space is limited and micromanipulation can be challenging. The noise floor of 1.6×10−3 nm/Hz is adequate for monitoring subangstrom displacement of force microscope cantilevers.
