Between 1979 and 1992, 32 patients (37 hips) were treated in the authors' institution by Salter osteotomy for Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease. Twenty-four patients were male and eight female. Nineteen patients were younger than 7 years of age (84 months). According to Waldenström and Jonsäter, 15 hips (45.54%) showed necrosis, 19 (51.35%) fragmentation, and 3 (8.11%) reossification. All necrotic hips were classified as Salter and Thompson B; considering those in fragmentation, 27 (79.41%) were classified as Catterall group 3 and 7 (20.59%) as group 4. Laredo's arthrographic classification, applied to 34 hips, showed 19 (55.88%) as group 3, 11 (32.35%) as group 4, and 4 (11.77%) as group 5. Mean follow-up was 115.94 months. Wiberg's center-edge angle increased significantly independent of sex and age. The clinical results according to Robinson et al did not show any correlation with sex, age, evolutionary stage, or classifications of Catterall and Mose. The final radiographic evaluation according to Mose showed 16 hips (43.26%) classified as good and 21 (56.76%) as poor. Considering the criteria of Stulberg et al for the final evaluation, 11 hips (29.73%) were included in class 1, 5 (13.51%) in class 2, 13 (35.13%) in class 3, and 6 (21.63%) in class 4. Patients younger than 7 years (84 months) showed better results. There was no significant difference between the results at first (reossification) and final evaluation (skeletal maturity).

Avaliamos 50 pacientes (57 quadris) com Displasia do desenvolvimento do Quadril Inveterada, divididos em 2 grupos de acordo com o tratamento aplicado. O grupo A foi constituído por 20 pacientes (24 quadris), 2 masculinos e 18 femininos, com média das idades = 65,92m nos quais a tração pré-operatória foi utilizada por 2-4 semanas, quando realizou-se a redução cruenta, a osteotomia de Salter ou a de Chiari e a osteotomia intertrocantérica de encurtamento e rotação-varização. O grupo B foi composto por 30 pacientes (33 quadris), 1 masculino e 29 femininos, com média das idades = 52,88m. Nestes, foi realizada uma osteotomia femoral diafisária para encurtamento, redução cruenta e osteotomia de Salter ou Chiari. Para a avaliação radiográfica analisamos: ângulo de Wiberg, necrose avascular, esfericidade da cabeça femoral; discrepância entre os membros inferiores. Para a avaliação clínica consideramos: dor, Trendelenburg, exame neurológico e arco de movimento. Observamos, clinicamente, 14(58,33%) bons resultados e 10(41,67%) regulares no grupo A e 23(69,70%) bons e 10(30,30%) regulares no B. Radiograficamente, foram considerados 9(37,50%) bons, 5(20,83%) regulares e 10(41,67%) maus resultados no grupo A e 23(69,70%) bons, 5(15,15%) regulares e 5(15,15%) maus resultados no B. Após análise estatística, observamos melhores resultados no grupo B.

Objective – To compare the head/neck ratio on the contralateral side of patients with a unilateral slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) with control individuals. Methods – Seventeen patients who were followed up at the Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Federal University of São Paulo, Brazil, between 1985 and 2007, were assessed. The control group consisted of 34 individuals from the same place who were matched for gender and age, with a history of trauma that necessitated pelvic radiography. The femoral head height and femoral neck measurements were made using simple pelvic radiography in accordance with the criteria of Bleck (1983), on both sides in the control group and on the contralateral hip in the patients. Nonparametric statistics were used, with a p-value ≤ 0.05. Results – There was no difference in the distribution of age, gender, body mass index and bone age between the groups. The head/neck ratio on the right and left side in the controls did not differ (p = 0.64). However, the head/neck ratio from the contralateral hip of the patients with SCFE was significantly lower than that of the control group (p = 0.00). Conclusion – The significantly lower head/neck ratio in the patients with epiphysiolysis could be indicative of a risk of SCFE.
