El trabajo que se presenta tiene como objetivo exponer algunas de las tendencias del cambio climático en la cuenca alta del río Santiago. A través del marco teórico de los “ríos voladores”, desarrollado por el científico británico Gerard Moss, se ofrecen algunas líneas de interpretación sobre la relación entre el cambio climático, la precipitación, los volúmenes del lago de Chapala y el desempeño agrícola en el caso del cultivo de maíz.
En este documento se analiza que, si bien el sector turístico ha sido de gran importancia para la economía mexicana en el ámbito macroeconómico, en los últimos años el impacto socio ambiental de esta actividad económica es elevado. Se sabe que el modelo transnacional del turismo está desvinculado de las cadenas locales de valor. El turismo de alto ingreso raramente se encuentre inserto en las estructuras económicas locales. En México, por ejemplo, gran parte de los ingresos provenientes del turismo internacional se exportan por la vía de los ingresos de las cadenas hoteleras y la organización de los circuitos turísticos o los costos de aerotransporte. Por otro lado, gran porcentaje de la ventaja competitiva del sector es producto de la externalización de los costos sociales y ambientales. Lo anterior se debe a que, por una parte, los salarios de los trabajadores de los servicios turísticos no pueden competir con los de los países industrializados y a que, frecuentemente, las instalaciones turísticas extranjeras, especialmente las hoteleras, se les ha permitido localizarse en zonas extremadamente sensibles para el equilibrio ecológico local. Los “ahorros” derivados de estas prácticas permiten al turismo “mexicano” competir a escala mundial en el sector. El artículo que se presenta, se explora un aspecto particular del subsidio ambiental de la actividad turística: la huella de carbono producida por los vuelos internacionales en el caso de uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de nuestro país, Puerto Vallarta.

En el trabajo que se presenta se discute el concepto de agua virtual como herramienta útil para entender los límites biofísicos del proceso de producción social. Así, con la ayuda de esta herramienta teórica, exploramos el impacto del comercio internacional en las reservas de agua en el caso de las exportaciones de fresa cultivada en el valle agrícola de Zamora, México.
La investigación aporta elementos para identif icar algunos de los procesos que generan la apropiación de las últimas reservas de agua prístina del subsuelo del valle agrícola de Zamorano al mercado mundial de fresa. Lo anterior es relevante debido a que los procesos característicos de esta fértil región del estado de Michoacán, representan un modelo que está siendo implementado en diversas regiones agrícolas del país. La investigación se llevó a cabo entre los años 2000 y 2006.
El ensayo que se presenta tiene el objetivo de explorar el contexto local, estatal y federal en la toma de decisiones con respecto a la política de aguas en México, en el caso del lago de Chapala. Abordamos la diversidad de intereses expresados en la lógica de las políticas públicas de los diversos niveles de gobierno. Con la ayuda de la técnica etnográfica de la entrevista comprensiva, hemos adelantado la hipótesis de que la crisis del agua, al menos en la cuenca Lerma-Chapala, se debe a la disfuncionalidad de las políticas públicas de los tres niveles de gobierno y la carencia de modelos de gestión que propicien la integración de visiones e interés de los actores sociales.
