The similarities to cuprates make iridates an interesting potential platform for investigating superconductivity. Equally attractive are their puzzling complex intrinsic interactions. Here, we report an ultrafast optical spectroscopy investigation of a coherent phonon mode in Sr 3 Ir 2 O 7 , a bilayer Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite iridate. An anomaly in the A 1g optical phonon (ν = 4.4 THz) is unambiguously observed below the Néel temperature (T N ), which we attribute to pseudospin-lattice coupling (PLC). Significantly, we find that PLC is the dominant interaction at low temperature, and we directly measure the PLC coefficient to be λ = 150 ± 20 cm -1 , which is two orders of magnitude higher than that in manganites (< 2.4 cm -1 ) and comparable to that in CuO (50 cm -1 , the strongest PLC or spin-lattice coupling (SLC) previously known). Moreover, we find that the strong PLC induces an anisotropic negative thermal expansion. Our findings highlight the key role of PLC in iridates and uncovers another intriguing similarity to cuprates.
APPENDIX D: OBTAINING THE PLC COEFFICIENT AND2 2 c J u
This paper describes an experimental investigation into the behaviour of RC beam-to-column connections under a column removal scenario induced by fire. A purpose-built hybrid heating furnace is employed to carry out the fire tests on five RC connection assemblages with varying reinforcement development lengths, with and without cooling effects. The thermal response of the RC connection specimens, including the temperature field and the axial forcefurnace temperature curves, is firstly described. Subsequently, push-down tests are carried out on the beam-column connections, and the horizontal support reactions are closely monitored using a specially-designed sensor system. Based on the experimental results, the joint vertical load-displacement and bending moment-rotation relationships are presented, together with an account of the failure modes observed. The mechanical behaviour is discussed in detail, including the tying and rotation capacity provided by the connection specimens, with emphasis on the effect of the reinforcement development length as well as the heating regime. The experimental capacity interaction curves are also compared with the theoretical prediction for ambient condition, and employed to carry out a detailed examination of the underlying failure mechanisms. Finally, the findings are used to provide practical recommendations for enhancing the structural robustness of structural configurations of the form considered in this study.
