Urinary tract infection (UTI) during pregnancy is assumed to be associated with increased maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality; hence, a proper assessment of knowledge and practices is crucial to formulate preventive strategies to ensure the health of both the mother and the baby. The study determined the knowledge, attitude, practices (KAP), and the beliefs of pregnant women about UTI based on the Health Belief Model. A survey questionnaire was used to gather data from pregnant women with and without UTI. The association of the pregnant women’s sociodemographic characteristics with their KAP and health beliefs was determined using Pearson’s chi-square test. Results of the study showed that the majority of pregnant women have unsatisfactory knowledge with a positive attitude and good hygienic practices against UTI. Educational qualification and socioeconomic status showed a significant association with the KAP of pregnant women. Positive attitude and satisfactory hygienic practices were evident among the respondents despite their unsatisfactory knowledge. The salient traits of the Filipino women are exhibited on the descriptive of the Health Belief Model that include being resilient amid a problem and considering difficulties not as barriers but opportunities to make life healthier and better.
This paper addresses a sensitive method for the detection of mycobacteria in hemodialysis water samples based on a magneto-actuated immunoassay with optical readout. In this approach, micro (2.8μm) sized magnetic particles were modified with an antibody against the lipoarabinomannan (LAM) located in the mycobacterial cell wall. The system relies on the immunocapturing of the mycobacteria with the tailored antiLAM magnetic particles to pre-concentrate the bacteria from the hemodialysis samples throughout an immunological reaction. The performance of the immunomagnetic separation on the magnetic carrier was evaluated using confocal microscopy to study the binding pattern, as well as a magneto-actuated immunoassay with optical readout for the rapid detection of the bacteria in spiked hemodialysis samples. In this approach, the antiLAM polyclonal antibody was labeled with fluorescein isothiocyanate. The optical readout was achieved by the incubation with a secondary anti-fluorescein antibody labeled with peroxidase as optical reporter. The magneto-actuated immunoassay was able to detect mycobacteria contamination in hemodialysis water at a limit of detection of 13CFUmL(-1) in a total assay time of 3h without any previous culturing pre-enrichment step.
In 2007, the Philippine government passed the Anti-Rabies Act to address rabies in the country. However, rabies is still a major public health concern in many provinces. This study aimed to evaluate the knowledge, attitude, and practices (KAP) of residents on rabies, the Anti Rabies Act, and responsible pet ownership (RPO) in Pampanga, Philippines. A cross-sectional survey was done from October 2017 to February 2018 in 92 randomly selected barangays in the province. Questionnaires were adapted from similar studies. Logistic regression was used to identify factors associated with KAP. Results showed that most people have good knowledge of the Anti-Rabies Act, RPO, and moderate knowledge of rabies. Their attitude toward rabies was appropriate, and on RPO, moderate. The RPO practices by most dog owners were good and moderate for most cat owners. Moreover, the subjects’ area of residence was a significant factor in their knowledge of RPO, and pet ownership status was a significant factor in their RPO attitude. In general, respondents showed satisfactory knowledge; however, there is a need to intensify information and education campaigns in rural areas.
