We provide an elementary description of the dynamics of defect centers in crystals in terms of a quantum optical master equation which includes spontaneous decay and a simplified vibronic interaction with lattice phonons. We present the general solution of the dynamical equation by means of the eigensystem of the Liouville operator and exemplify the usage of this damping basis to calculate the dynamics of the electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom and to provide an analysis of the spectra of scattered light. The dynamics and spectral features are discussed with respect to the applicability for color centers, especially for negatively charged nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond.

HepaRG is a bipotent stem cell line that can be differentiated towards hepatocyte-like and biliary-like cells. The entire cultivation process requires 1 month and relies on the addition of 2% dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to the culture. Our motivation in this research is to differentiate HepaRG cells (progenitor cells and undifferentiated cells) towards hepatocyte-like cells by minimizing the cultivation time and without using DMSO treatment by instead using a microfluidic device combined with the following strategies: (a) comparison of extracellular matrices (matrigel and collagen I), (b) types of flow (one or both sides), and (c) effects of DMSO. Our results demonstrate that matrigel promotes the differentiation of progenitor cells towards hepatocytes and biliary-like cells. Moreover, the frequent formation of HepaRG cell clusters was observed by a supply of both sides of flow, and the cell viability and liver specific functions were influenced by DMSO. Finally, differentiated HepaRG progenitor cells cultured in a microfluidic device for 14 days without DMSO treatment yielded 70%of hepatocyte-like cells with a highly polarized organization that reacted to stimulation with IL-6 to produce C-reactive protein (CRP). This culture model has high potential for investigating cell differentiation and liver pathophysiology research.

We present a closed-form analytical solution to the eigenvalue problem of the Liouville operator generating the dissipative dynamics of the standard optomechanical system. The corresponding Lindblad master equation describes the dynamics of a single-mode field inside an optical cavity coupled by radiation pressure to its moving mirror. The optical field and the mirror are in contact with separate environments, which are assumed at zero and finite temperature, respectively. The optomechanical damping basis refers to the exact set of eigenvectors of the generator that, together with the exact eigenvalues, are explicitly derived. Both the weak-and the strong-coupling regime, which includes combined decay mechanisms, are solved in this work.

In a hybrid optomechanical setup consisting of a two-level atom in a cavity with a pendular end-mirror, the interplay between the light field's radiation pressure on the mirror and the dipole interaction with the atom can lead to an effect, which manifests itself in the suppression of Rabi oscillations of the atomic population. This effect is present when the system is in the single-photon strong coupling regime and has an analogy in the photon blockade of optomechanics.

Quantum optimal control represents a powerful technique to enhance the performance of quantum experiments by engineering the controllable parameters of the Hamiltonian. However, the computational overhead for the necessary optimization of these control parameters drastically increases as their number grows. We devise a novel variant of a gradient-free optimal-control method by introducing the idea of phase-modulated driving fields, which allows us to find optimal control fields efficiently. We numerically evaluate its performance and demonstrate the advantages over standard Fourier-basis methods in controlling an ensemble of two-level systems showing an inhomogeneous broadening. The control fields optimized with the phase-modulated method provide an increased robustness against such ensemble inhomogeneities as well as control-field fluctuations and environmental noise, with one order of magnitude less of average search time. Robustness enhancement of single quantum gates is also achieved by the phase-modulated method. Under environmental noise, an XY-8 sequence constituted by optimized gates prolongs the coherence time by 50% compared with standard rectangular pulses in our numerical simulations, showing the application potential of our phase-modulated method in improving the precision of signal detection in the field of quantum sensing.
