Abstract. The remote sensing of the atmospheric greenhouse gases methane (CH 4 ) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) in the troposphere from instrumentation aboard satellites is a new area of research. In this manuscript, results obtained from observations of the up-welling radiation in the near-infrared by SCIAMACHY on board ENVISAT are presented. Vertical columns of CH 4 , CO 2 and oxygen (O 2 ) have been retrieved and the (air or) O 2 -normalised CH 4 and CO 2 column amounts, the dry air column averaged mixing ratios XCH 4 and XCO 2 derived. In this manuscript the first results, obtained by using the version 0.4 of the Weighting Function Modified (WFM) DOAS retrieval algorithm applied to SCIAMACHY data, are described and compared with global models. For the set of individual cloud free measurements over land the standard deviation of the difference with respect to the models is in the range ∼100-200 ppbv (5-10%) for XCH 4 and ∼14-32 ppmv (4-9%) for XCO 2 . The interhemispheric difference of the methane mixing ratio, as determined from single day data, is in the range 30-110 ppbv and in reasonable agreement with the corresponding model data (48-71 ppbv). The weak inter-hemispheric difference of the CO 2 mixing ratio can also be detected with single day data. The spatiotemporal pattern of the measured and the modelled XCO 2 are in reasonable agreement. However, the amplitude of the difference between the maximum and the minimum for SCIAMACHY XCO 2 is about ±20 ppmv which is about a factor of four larger than the variability of the model data which is about ±5 ppmv. More studies are needed to explain the observed differences. The XCO 2 model field shows low CO 2 concentrations beginning of January 2003 over a spatially extended CO 2 sink region located Correspondence to: M. Buchwitz (michael.buchwitz@iup.physik.uni-bremen.de) in southern tropical/sub-tropical Africa. The SCIAMACHY data also show low CO 2 mixing ratios over this area. According to the model the sink region becomes a source region about six months later and exhibits higher mixing ratios. The SCIAMACHY and the model data over this region show a similar time dependence over the period from January to October 2003. These results indicate that for the first time a regional CO 2 surface source/sink region has been detected by measurements from space. The interpretation of the SCIAMACHY CO 2 and CH 4 measurements is difficult, e.g., because the error analysis of the currently implemented retrieval algorithm indicates that the retrieval errors are on the same order as the small greenhouse gas mixing ratio changes that are to be detected.

[1] Space-based measurements of reflected sunlight in the near-infrared (NIR) region promise to yield accurate and precise observations of the global distribution of atmospheric CO 2 . The Orbiting Carbon Observatory (OCO) is a future NASA mission, which will use this technique to measure the column-averaged dry air mole fraction of CO 2 (X CO 2 ) with the precision and accuracy needed to quantify CO 2 sources and sinks on regional scales ($1000 Â 1000 km 2 ) and to characterize their variability on seasonal timescales. Here, we have used the OCO retrieval algorithm to retrieve X CO 2 and surface pressure from space-based Scanning Imaging Absorption Spectrometer for Atmospheric Chartography (SCIAMACHY) measurements and from coincident ground-based Fourier transform spectrometer (FTS) measurements of the O 2 A band at 0.76 mm and the 1.58 mm CO 2 band for Park Falls, Wisconsin. Even after accounting for a systematic error in our representation of the O 2 absorption cross sections, we still obtained a positive bias between SCIAMACHY and FTS X CO 2 retrievals of $3.5%. Additionally, the retrieved surface pressures from SCIAMACHY systematically underestimate measurements of a calibrated pressure sensor at the FTS site. These findings lead us to speculate about inadequacies in the forward model of our retrieval algorithm. By assuming a 1% intensity offset in the O 2 A band region for the SCIAMACHY X CO 2 retrieval, we significantly improved the spectral fit and achieved better consistency between SCIAMACHY and FTS X CO 2 retrievals. We compared the seasonal cycle of X CO 2 at Park Falls from SCIAMACHY and FTS retrievals with calculations of the Model of Atmospheric Transport and Chemistry/Carnegie-AmesStanford Approach (MATCH/CASA) and found a good qualitative agreement but with MATCH/CASA underestimating the measured seasonal amplitude. Furthermore, since SCIAMACHY observations are similar in viewing geometry and spectral range to those of OCO, this study represents an important test of the OCO retrieval algorithm and validation concept using NIR spectra measured from space. Finally, we argue that significant improvements in precision and accuracy could be obtained from a dedicated CO 2 instrument such as OCO, which has much higher spectral and spatial resolutions than SCIAMACHY. These measurements would then provide critical data for improving our understanding of the carbon cycle and carbon sources and sinks.

Abstract. The near-infrared nadir spectra measured by SCIAMACHY on-board ENVISAT contain information on the vertical columns of important atmospheric trace gases such as carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH 4 ), and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ). The scientific algorithm WFM-DOAS has been used to retrieve this information. For CH 4 and CO 2 also column averaged mixing ratios (XCH 4 and XCO 2 ) have been determined by simultaneous measurements of the dry air mass. All available spectra of the year 2003 have been processed. We describe the algorithm versions used to generate the data (v0.4; for methane also v0.41) and show comparisons of monthly averaged data over land with global measurements (CO from MOPITT) and models (for CH 4 and CO 2 ). We show that elevated concentrations of CO resulting from biomass burning have been detected in reasonable agreement with MOPITT. The measured XCH 4 is enhanced over India, south-east Asia, and central Africa in September/October 2003 in line with model simulations, where they result from surface sources of methane such as rice fields and wetlands. The CO 2 measurements over the Northern Hemisphere show the lowest mixing ratios around July in qualitative agreement with model simulations indicating that the large scale pattern of CO 2 uptake by the growing vegetation can be detected with SCIAMACHY. We also identified potential problems such as a too low inter-hemispheric gradient for CO, a time dependent bias of the methane columns on the order of a few percent, and a few percent too high CO 2 over parts of the Sahara.

Abstract.A new algorithm approach called Weighting Function Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (WF-DOAS) is presented which has been developed to retrieve total ozone columns from nadir observations of the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment. By fitting the vertically integrated ozone weighting function rather than ozone crosssection to the sun-normalized radiances, a direct retrieval of vertical column amounts is possible. The new WFDOAS approach takes into account the slant path wavelength modulation that is usually neglected in the standard DOAS approach using single airmass factors. This paper focuses on the algorithm description and error analysis, while in a companion paper by Weber et al. (2004) a detailed validation with groundbased measurements is presented. For the first time several auxiliary quantities directly derived from the GOME spectral range such as cloud-top-height and cloud fraction (O 2 -A band) and effective albedo using the Lambertian Equivalent Reflectivity (LER) near 377 nm are used in combination as input to the ozone retrieval. In addition the varying ozone dependent contribution to the Raman correction in scattered light known as Ring effect has been included. The molecular ozone filling-in that is accounted for in the new algorithm has the largest contribution to the improved total ozone results from WFDOAS compared to the operational product. The precision of the total ozone retrieval is estimated to be better than 3% for solar zenith angles below 80 • .

Abstract. The three carbon gases carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), and methane (CH 4 ) are important atmospheric constituents affecting air quality and climate. The near-infrared nadir spectra measured by SCIAMACHY on ENVISAT contain information on the vertical columns of these gases which we retrieve using a modified DOAS algorithm (WFM-DOAS or WFMD). Our main data products are CO vertical columns and dry-air column averaged mixing ratios of methane (CH 4 ) and CO 2 (denoted XCH 4 and XCO 2 ). For CO and CH 4 we present new results for the year 2003 obtained with an improved version of WFM-DOAS (WFMDv0.5) retrieved from Level 1 version 4 (Lv1v4) spectra. This data set has recently been compared with a network of ground based FTIR stations. Here we describe the WFMDv0.5 algorithm, present global and regional maps, and comparisons with global reference data. We show that major problems of the previous versions (v0.4 and v0.41) related to the varying ice-layer on the SCIAMACHY channel 8 detector have been solved. Compared to MOPITT the SCIAMACHY CO columns are on average higher by about 10-20%. Regionally, however, especially over central South America, differences can be much larger. For methane we present global and regional maps which are compared to TM5 model simulations performed using standard methane emission inventories. We show that methane source regions can be clearly detected with SCIAMACHY. We also show that the methane data product can be significantly further improved using Lv1v5 spectra with improved calibration. For CO 2 we present three years of SCIAMACHY CO 2 measurements over Park Falls, Wisconsin, USA, retrieved from Lv1v5. We show that the quality of CO 2 retrieved from Correspondence to: M.
