1980, driven largely by China. South Asia has displayed consistently strong savings rates, fluctuating between 10 and 20 percent since 1985, with India dominating the aggregate figure. Over the past decades, Latin America's rates have remained fairly constant, while Eastern Europe and Central Asia are more variable. In Sub-Saharan Africa, ANS has not only declined in recent years but dipped below zero, suggesting unsustainable development and declining wealth. Freire, M.E. (2013). Urbanization and green growth in Africa. Green growth series report 1. The growth dialogue Primary question asked: What would it take for African cities and countries to accommodate the upcoming urban explosion without a negative impact on the environment? Are there opportunities for green growth from urbanisation? Key findings: As a combined policy imperative, countries and major cities face the opportunity to drive more efficient growth, lower long-term costs of managing cities, and greater ease of metropolitan management. Given Africa's demographics and projected urbanization patterns, green growth is clearly the superior policy approach to create sustainable and inclusive economic growth for its increasing urban populations. Clean / green urbanization is cost effective in the short, medium and long term. Opportunities include integrated transit / land development and drawing on the power of the private sector. Data and information provision will be increasingly important to monitor the effectiveness of policies.
The purpose of this study is to check how ICT led business opportunity devel- opment model of ITC e-Choupal affected “Capability” development of the people in rural India. The survey of three different regions of India, included 319 e-Choupal beneficiaries and 10 ITC officials and elected representatives of villages. Statistical analysis revealed that Capability Enhancement of farmers depended on the extent to which farmers trusted and participated in ICT activities that varied based on their education level but specifically e-Choupal could generate only limited business opportunities for rural masses. However, the business opportunities definitely affected the capability enhancement parameters. The ICT enabled business models can be well used by corporates and governments of devel- oping economies in Asia and Africa for capability development of rural masses as these models provide new business opportunities for them. The field survey based framework showed how ICT based business opportunity development model of e-Choupal can affect the income, time and saving of farmers in developing economy.
This paper considers the development of women (especially rural and the poor) as the central aspect to the poverty alleviation and reduction of inequality. The paper proposes an extensive usage of information technology to enhance the ‘capability’ (as in the concept of ‘Capability Approach’ by Prof. Amrtya Sen) of women so as to reduce poverty and inequality. The paper is suggestive of examples of few prominent business oriented and development related efforts designed and executed for the development of women by Government and other organizations and is logically indicative of the idea that those efforts would have given wondrous results, if information technology would have played a role there. One of the examples quoted in the paper would be DWCRA (the development of women and children in rural areas) scheme. The Paper actually emphasizes on the fact and proposes that Radical Feminism may be reduced through the ‘Capability Development’ of women through Business Opportunity Development, through the usage of Information and Communication Technology. The paper further quotes few examples of ICT based efforts in other South Asian Countries also.
