Early life stages of many marine organisms are being challenged by rising seawater temperature and CO 2 concentrations, but their physiological responses to these environmental changes still remain unclear. In the present study, we show that future predictions of ocean warming (+4°C) and acidification (ΔpH=0.5 units) may compromise the development of early life stages of a highly commercial teleost fish, Solea senegalensis. Exposure to future conditions caused a decline in hatching success and larval survival. Growth, metabolic rates and thermal tolerance increased with temperature but decreased under acidified conditions. Hypercapnia and warming amplified the incidence of deformities by 31.5% (including severe deformities such as lordosis, scoliosis and kyphosis), while promoting the occurrence of oversized otoliths (109.3% increase). Smaller larvae with greater skeletal deformities and larger otoliths may face major ecophysiological challenges, which might potentiate substantial declines in adult fish populations, putting in jeopardy the species' fitness under a changing ocean.

The effects of various dietary protein levels on growth performance, whole body composition and nutrient utilization were studied in two-banded sea bream (Diplodus vulgaris), a candidate species for aquaculture. Fish (initial weight 6.1 g) were fed to satiety six iso-energetic diets, containing 5%, 12.5%, 25%, 35%, 45% or 55% of crude protein during 72 days. Fish fed 35% and 45% protein attained better growth and feed utilization than the other groups (P < 0.05). Daily growth index and feed conversion ratio were the poorest for fish fed 5% and 12.5% protein (P < 0.001), while the 25% and 55% protein groups had intermediate performance. Lipid retention increased significantly from 13.7% to 30.1% (P < 0.0001) and protein retention decreased from 35.5% to 21.3% (P < 0.01) with increasing protein levels from 12.5% to 45%. Muscle protein, lipid and energy concentrations were not significantly affected by dietary protein level. The estimated protein requirement for maintenance and maximum growth of two-banded seabream growing from 6 to 20 g were 7.5% and 35.7%, respectively. Protein requirements as calculated from body protein gain were 2.3 and 6.5 g of protein intake per kilogram body weight per day. KEY WORDS

To study the impact of purse-seine fishing on deliberately released sardine, two laboratory experiments were performed to explore the effect of net confinement for 10, 20, 40, and 60 min at 18 and 23°C. A third experiment considered two levels of fish density while confined for 20 and 40 min at 16°C. Analysis of cortisol and haematocrit demonstrated that stress immediately after simulated fishing was milder than in commercial fishing and did not correlate with observed delayed mortality. Scale loss was related to the probability of dying (mean values of 16.3 and 2% for dead fish and survivors, respectively), and fin erosion was a long-term stress response observed in both dead and surviving fish. Time of confinement was an important stressor, with survival rates decreasing significantly with increasing periods in the net, and temperature having an additional negative effect. Density effects were less conclusive, but there was some indication that survival correlated with biological condition (heavier fish were more likely to survive). It seems that delayed mortality after release can be substantial, although death is not certain and appropriately modified fishing operations and favourable environmental conditions may enhance the probability of sardine survival.

The current study contributes to fill the knowledge gap on the neurotoxicity of inorganic mercury (iHg) in fish through the implementation of a combined evaluation of brain morphometric alterations (volume and total number of neurons plus glial cells in specific regions of the brain) and swimming behavior (endpoints related with the motor activity and mood/anxiety-like status). White seabream (Diplodus sargus) was exposed to realistic levels of iHg in water (2μgL(-1)) during 7 (E7) and 14 days (E14). After that, fish were allowed to recover for 28 days (PE28) in order to evaluate brain regeneration and reversibility of behavioral syndromes. A significant reduction in the number of cells in hypothalamus, optic tectum and cerebellum was found at E7, accompanied by relevant changes on swimming behavior. Moreover, the decrease in the number of neurons and glia in the molecular layer of the cerebellum was followed by a contraction of its volume. This is the first time that a deficit on the number of cells is reported in fish brain after iHg exposure. Interestingly, a recovery of hypothalamus and cerebellum occurred at E14, as evidenced by the identical number of cells found in exposed and control fish, and volume of cerebellum, which might be associated with an adaptive phenomenon. After 28 days post-exposure, the optic tectum continued to show a decrease in the number of cells, pointing out a higher vulnerability of this region. These morphometric alterations coincided with numerous changes on swimming behavior, related both with fish motor function and mood/anxiety-like status. Overall, current data pointed out the iHg potential to induce brain morphometric alterations, emphasizing a long-lasting neurobehavioral hazard.
