ABSTRACTAn analysis was carried out of the change in the composition and structure of vegetation along an elevation gradient in Zopilote Canyon, located in the Balsas River Basin in Guerrero. In an altitude range from 450 to 2,800 m, 28 sampling plots were established in five different vegetation types, defined by their physiognomy. Within each vegetation type, six 1,000 m 2 plots were selected for sampling tree species, and within these a 100 m 2 subplot was established for shrubs and two 6 m 2 subplots for herbaceous plants. The structural attribute estimated was the relative importance value of each species; cluster analysis was used for classifying vegetation types. In the elevation range studied, 314 species of vascular plants were identified (including four in the NOM-059-ECOL-2001), in 204 genera and 79 families. The most species-rich families were: Asteraceae, Fabaceae, Burseracea, Lamiacaea and Euphorbiaceae. Five vegetation types were identified: tropical deciduous forest, palm swamp, Quercus forest, Pinus forest and mountain cloud forest. The close proximity of these different vegetation types is most likely due to the abrupt changes in topographical and climatic conditions in Zopilote Canyon.

Sturnira bakeri was recently described from southwestern Ecuador near the Peruvian border and was suggested to occur also in Peru. To confirm this hypothesis we present a morphological and morphometric revision of specimens of Sturnira collectedfrom northwestern Peru. As result, we report the presence of S. bakeri from Peru and extend its distribution range southwestward by at least 32.3 km from previous occurrences, and we suggest that S. luisi is apparently absent from Peru. We also found evidence of sexual size dimorphism in S. bakeri.
ABSTRACTChilean Mediterranean ecosystems, the only of this type present in South America of the four present in the world, are considered priority areas for conservation due to their high concentration of endemic species that have experienced accelerated rates of habitat destruction. They contain more than 39% of the mammal species, 47% of its endemic species, and 65% of the threatened species of Chile. Yet, these ecosystems are poorly represented in the system of protected areas, one of which is the Reserva Nacional Lago Peñuelas (RNLP) that is part of the Biosphere Reserve La Campana-Peñuelas, but whose mammal fauna is poorly documented. We studied both α and β diversity of the mammal assemblage in all three environments present at the RNLP (sclerophyllous forest, mixed sh...
