Resumen: Los hospitales sevillanos gozaron de un importante patrimonio para la subsistencia de la institución y de sus enfermos. Para ello, la oficialía puso en funcionamiento mecanismos de control que sirviesen para una provechosa gestión de sus rentas y derechos, ideando instrumentos capaces de preservar sus posesiones y ponerlas en explotación. El presente artículo trata de identificar los elementos definitorios de estos libros, denominados protocolos de bienes, señalando sus características y evolución desde modelos arcaicos hasta su forma definitiva, alcanzada entre finales del siglo XVI y principios del XVII, momento en el que se consagró su uso como códice principal. Para la consecución de este artículo se han utilizado los fondos documentales de la hospitalidad hispalense, conservados en diferentes archivos de la ciudad, de donde se han tomado varios ejemplos significativos que demuestran los cambios que se produjeron, tanto en su estructura interna como en su confección material, subrayando la participación de oficiales, libreros, iluminadores y calígrafos. Del mismo modo, se pone de relieve el carácter poliédrico y multifuncional que llegaron a tener, empleándose no sólo como instrumentos de control hacendístico, sino también como creadores de una identidad corporativa. La multiplicidad de hospitales en Sevilla permite observar las diferentes tipologías y características que los protocolos tuvieron, modificándose el contenido de los mismos atendiendo a las diferentes necesidades de cada institución. En la Capilla de San Hermenegildo de la Catedral de Sevilla se conserva el sepulcro que Lorenzo Mercadante tallara entre 1454-1458 para albergar los restos del cardenal Juan de Cervantes, destacado prelado que participó en los concilios de Siena y Basilea. El objeto de estudio de este artículo se vertebra en torno al programa epigráfico que se ideó para perpetuar el recuerdo de este ilustre prelado hispalense. Para ello, se han empleado diferentes fuentes documentales y bibliográficas, con las que se ha podido contextualizar todo lo concerniente a la fundación de la capilla sepulcral y las posibles con-notaciones que la relacionan con el mensaje epigráfico. Como en otros monumentos funerarios de la Castilla del siglo XV, el sepulcro del cardenal Juan de Cervantes constituye una importante aportación al panorama necrológico del momento, al concentrar, en el mismo espacio, dos modelos gráficos dife-rentes: el humanístico y el gótico. La escritura empleada en el epitafio sepulcral y en la suscripción del autor, se relacionan con otros monumentos coetáneos procedentes de Castilla e Italia, ejemplos que demuestran la importación de nuevas sensibilidades estéticas vinculadas a la escritura.
Escritores, compiladores, copistas y traductores intervinieron de forma efectiva en la composición de manuscritos durante la Baja Edad Media, adivinándose una serie de cambios en los albores de la Edad Moderna. Este artículo trata de identificar y poner en valor a los diferentes autores y participantes en la elaboración de algunos manuscritos conservados en la Biblioteca Capitular y Colombina de Sevilla y en la Biblioteca Nacional de España, subrayando algunas de sus características formales y trazando una línea de la evolución que el libro experimentó en estas centurias. The proliferation of hospitals in the city of Seville throughout the Modern Age improved the existing health care network. The newly created establishments, be it by private initiative or by public institutions, specialized in the care of specific social groups and in different diseases. They stipulated diverse admission procedures and patient care that were captured in the statutes and constitutions, marking the guidelines of the sanitary circuit within the establishment.
