Molten Ga is an excellent solvent for the preparation of the polygallide Sm2NiGa12. The compound is metallic and adopts an unusual three-dimensional structure composed of two different kinds of alternating segments. One segment has Ni and Ga atoms and is reminiscent of the KCu4S3 structure type. The other has only Ga atoms and adopts an elaborate Ga network.

Molten Ga as a Solvent for Exploratory Synthesis: The New Ternary Polygallide Sm 2 NiGa 12 . -The title compound is prepared from Sm and Ni in Ga (sealed alumina tube, 900 • C, 96 h, 88% yield). As revealed by single crystal XRD it crystallizes in the tetragonal space group P4/nbm with Z = 2. Its structure can be described as a three-dimensional framework of [NiGa 12 ] with Sm atoms residing in cavities made of Ga atoms. The [NiGa 12 ] part consists of two distinct alternating two-dimensional segments: a NiGa 6 segment and a Ga-only segment. The Ni atoms are in an almost cubic environment of eight Ga atoms. The results of tight-binding extended Hueckel band structure calculations predict the title compound to be a metallic conductor. -(CHEN, X.
